Chapter 70—His Story
As the darkness of the night deepened, Jia tossed and turned in bed. She glances at the clock; it's 4:30 in the morning. Recalling the worried face of Xu Long Wei keeps her awake until now.
When they were in the tub, she listened as he explained his worries for their little family. Even worse, the unforeseen danger might potentially come from the Xu family itself. She has many questions in regard to his family; however, she refrained from digging deeper.
Until now, she wanted to respect his decision to conceal some information from her since he has always dealt with simple issues without involving her. The only problem is, this setup doesn't work for Jia anymore.
Although Xu Long Wei proves that he has become a powerful man worthy to stand on top above others with his acquired wealth, Jia aspires to stand with him as well. In order to support him, she needs to know everything about his story. So far, she is aware of the threat his family might scheme against them, but why would they do that?
Besides, didn't he inherit his money and position from his grandfather? So why would he need to protect it from the elders? As Jia tried to ponder more, her restlessness through the night intensified.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the bed, Xu Long Wei couldn't sleep as well. He is trained to be aware of his surroundings at all times, so Jia's movement keeps him from sleeping. "Love, what's wrong?" he couldn't help but ask.
"Can you tell me about your family's story? I want to know more about you."
"Hmmn, what about it?"
"I am wondering why we need to protect ourselves from them." I need to know who my enemies are so I can plan for the best counterattack in case they ever try to start a war against us. You know I always want to come prepared."
"Hmmn, true. But war might be overstretched. Although, I could say that their plot has become bolder and more dangerous over the past year. Just last year, Xu Li's attempted kidnapping killed 7 of my soldiers, and 10 were injured after my men exchanged fire with the kidnappers. Later, I discovered that my father's older brother planned the whole thing, but since I have no evidence at hand, I couldn't bring this up to the family."
Jia was shocked after hearing that her son was almost kidnapped and the culprit was Xu Long Wei's uncle. She didn't expect the seriousness of their situation until now. All this time, she believed that Xu Long Wei's status and contribution to the family guaranteed an imaginable power.
Xu Long Wei stared at Jia's porcelain face. The freckles scattered on her cheek give the illusion of a starry night. He gently touched her face and pulled her head onto his waiting chest. "I never wanted to tell you about myself since I know you will not like it. But seeing as it bothers you terribly, I have no choice but to share my misery all these years. However, I want you to promise me that there will be no dead body tomorrow." He directly looks her in the eye. His expression reflects his desire for her to take his word seriously.
"I promise your family will have at least a year to live." She unwillingly answered. Xu Long Wei gazed at the open window and stayed silent for a while. Jia didn't make a noise and waited patiently. She knows that it will be the first time for the man to expose his life to others.
"I was seven years old when my life turned upside down.' He started.
"The Xu family was just one of the elite families in Country A. My grandfather was the head while my father is training himself to take over the family's head position once my grandfather retires. They are always together in every business transaction, domestically or internationally. Everyone loves my father because of his approachable and easy-going personality. For me, he is always the caring yet strict father I admire the most. He was perfect in all senses. Even now, I could say that I was lucky to have him as a father. I thought that my life would always be secure since he is there for us, until..."
