Chen Xu looked through the light screen on his helmet and glanced at Yang Jinxia's position, a good ten or so kilometers away. In the past, traveling to any location involved sitting in a transport pod, so he never had a concrete concept of distance. Now, as he needed to walk, he realized just how vast the Dawn was.
When he reached the end of the corridor, he discovered that the door ahead wouldn't open automatically. He pushed hard at a spot marked with a "manual" sign on the right, revealing a red lever switch.
He gripped the switch with his hand and pulled hard, and with a hiss, the door opened about ten centimeters. He moved forward, gripping the edge with both hands, and forced the door open.
Beyond the door was darkness, and the light from the corridor's ceiling only reached part of the way in front of him. Looking from light to dark, his vision was eventually swallowed by the blackness.
