Chapter 1 - Prologue

The sky was pitch black without a single star in sight as the city lights covered up their brilliant glow. With cars, traffic lights, lamp posts, and buildings illuminating every corner, it was no wonder that even the brightest star couldn't be seen.

The man sighed as he took the world in from the rooftop. Just like the sky was polluted with the city lights, his ears were polluted with the noise of traffic. The bustling life of the city had worn him out as even the pigeons seemed to have no time to spare. Everyone was too busy getting to where they should be and never stopped to look at the scenery along the way.

Dang! Dang! Dang!

The city's clock tower snapped him out of his thoughts. It was 12 AM and he made it through another day of his arduous life. But what was the point of living a life he didn't want to? He looked down at the parking lot tens of floors beneath him. One jump was all it would take for it to all be over.

He tentatively climbed onto the ledge, not wanting to fall before he was ready. Then he closed his eyes and took off his glasses before opening them again. The wind felt stronger without the extra shielding from his lens, and the bright lights became blurs of color to him. Strangely he felt relaxed looking at the blobs of moving color and hearing the loud sounds of traffic. His fear had lessened and instead his excitement was becoming more pronounced. He started rocking himself and teetering on the ledge. The adrenal rush of literally being on the edge of death amused him.

Finally, feeling the exhilaration die down, he closed his eyes, took a step forward, and let his body fall. The sound of wind rushed past him, more harsh than ever, as if scolding him for not being able to hold on like the others. It didn't matter though, the wind could only scold for a few seconds before a loud CRACK signified the end of his life.

The pain he had feared never came and neither did the regret he thought he would feel. Instead, he was at peace as everything went dark.
