Chapter 15 - Ch 15 Attribute Examination

Present time....

Esika stood behind a long slow moving line. Upforward, he could see a man who was dressed in robes and had a long beard examining the newly awakened.

He couldn't hear what they were discussing from the distance he was at, but he could see after they were done talking the man would make a gesture to an object by his side.

The newly awakened person would then place their hands on that object, a large clear crystal ball. Each time a new person did this, the color and shape shown on the ball would somewhat change in form and intensity.

He had seen four different colors so far. Blue, Red, Brown, and Silver. Esika, theorized that the colors represented affinities, and the deeper the color, the better the talent for the affinity.

He didn't know what any of the shapes represented, But he could somewhat tell by how the examiner's face looked like after seeing it, whether it was good or bad. The examiner would sometimes nod his head in approval or shake his head in disappointment.

The line grew shorter as he moved along closer to the examiner. Finally he had only one other person in front of him.

The examiner looked sternly at the boy, who was waiting for him to begin. The examiner glanced at the one besides him for a few seconds. The examiner's assistant was done writing down the previous Childs information and gave him a look to continue.

"Give me your name, your social class, and the element you think you've received from you vision" The man spoke quickly.

The boy didn't delay, quickly telling the man in a professional manner his information. Esika, had heard the boy clearly, but could not understand. The boy's vision completely differed from his own. Rather then Esika's coherent vision, the boy's vision was more intangible. He spoke more of feelings then anything else, and when it came down to telling the examiner what he saw, the boy said he didn't see anything, rather he heard the flowing of water.

Unlike the other times Esika had seen, The examiner neither looked at the boy with approval nor disapproval in his eye's.

"Do you think he might be the one" He said to the one next to him. Esika, brow somewhat jolted 'the one' he thought? Could the boy he was behind be someone special.

" I don't know.. The boy's vision differs from the norm, but not enough to make him special... afterall, there have been cases of people not seeing anything in their visons before.. though few" The examiner's assistant said.

The long bearded examiner nodded to the at what the other had said, then looked back at the boy who was looking at him in waiting.

"Alright then boy place your hand on the orb and concentrate. Try to bring out the feeling that you felt when you had your vision".

The boy did as instructed and started to concentrate. Finally, a dark blue entered the sight of everyone. Esika, alongside those in the line were taken aback. The boy's color had been one of the deepest they've seen for a while now. The blue of his affinity quickly formed into a Diamond shape.

The boy looked so happy that he could cry, but Esika, could see a flicker of disappointment enter the lead examiners eye's.

"He's indeed not the one" The examiner's assistant standing to the side told the lead examiner.

The bearded old man nodded in return and looked towards the now confused boy who had overheard them "Don't be afraid.. you're talents are indeed good.. And with the shape of a diamond, that represents both good offense and defense your future looks promising.. young one" The beaming smile returned to the boy's face as he was told by a Guard to leave.

"Next" The Examiner said once more.

Upon seeing, Esika's ragged form the examiners stone face quickly turned into a frown. He had seen a few commoners awaken in this generation, but the ones he did see had looked far better then Esika.

"Give me your name, your social class, and the element you think you've received from you vision" The old man decided to look past, Esika's unpalatable figure and continue executing his job professionally, but the sentence that came out of Esika's mouth made him abruptly interrupt.

"Sl..Slave you said slave?" He shouted and looked to Esika for confirmation.

Esika, nodded slowly while looking down and twiddling his fingers close to his chest. The man had drawn a crowd of attention on Esika with that outburst. He, couldn't help but start to sweat in anxiety.

"Did he say he was a slave" All around people questioned.

"Silence" The long bearded examiner yelled. Realizing what he had done, the examiner looked towards Esika with an apologetic expression and asked him to continue.

Esika, with his most courageous voice finished telling the examiner his information.

"Okay, you can stop" The man said once he had gotten the details he needed. he then continued after a pause "Know this boy.. Though you have been born with lesser means, and your past has been littered with misfortune's. The title that you've known for all of your life no longer shall define you. Now you are not only a free man, but you have become a blessed existence.. one that has been chosen by the goddess herself".

Esika, couldn't help but stare blankly at the man. He had thought that after divulging his past to a Noble that he would receive nothing but scorn.

"T..Thank you Mr. Noble man" His voice stuttered with true appreciation.

" Don't humble me with such a title". The man smiled and looked at Esika in the eye's. "Afterall I was but a commoner myself".

Esika's blank stare was replaced with one of awe. To think that someone other then a nobleman would be allowed to administrate such an important test truly surprised him.

"S..sir if you don't mind me asking. Who are you?" Esika, didn't know what courage inspired him to ask such a question.

The old man did not look offended. Rather, a smile was plastered on his face. Looking at the waiting boy in front of him he couldn't help but develop a fond opinion of the boy.

"My name? It's Everatt J. Moth the first."

Esika, looked at the man with a smile. He was getting ready to thank the man, when all of a sudden noisy discussions drew his attention to the back.

"It's vice headmaster Moth" All of a sudden a litany of people echoing the same name sounded out. Esika could guess from the surprise and reverence he'd heard from the crowd, that the man standing before him had a special title, especially sense the people who were discussing him had noble background.

"I said Silence" The man sternly shooshed the crowd.

"Let us continue" He then looked back at Esika and motioned him to begin again.

As he was getting into the detail about his vision, Esika quickly realized from the way that the Examiner was looking at him that his vision must of veered from the norm.

"A giant".. The examiner repeated to himself in confusion. Looking at his assistant he could see the same bewildered expression written on his face.

"Elder moth.. You don't think this boy is the one right?..." The assistant said

"I do think so" His answer somewhat befuddled the assistant to his side.

"But.. Strong of will.. Aura that demands respect.. None of what the Saintess told us fit's this boy" The assistant debated.

'Indeed.. from the way the Saintess described the one who had the special constitution.. this one doesn't really fit the role' The old man scratched his beard and mused on the words of the Saintess. 'Could I be wrong?"

"Let us begin the test then" The old man hurried Esika to the side near the crystal ball and told him what he told all of the previous examinee's.

Esika began. He concentrated and tried to recall the feeling of his vision. After a few long seconds nothing worked.

The old man looked towards Esika in confusion. He had never seen such a thing. Even if one's affinity for their element was a low, there would still be a dim color that would appear on the crystal. It was a first to see nothing at all appear on the crystal ball.

"Could you perhaps be missing something.." The old man questioned, but Esika could provide no satisfactory answer.

Seconds drew out, and soon a full minute went by. Esika, began to feel nauseous from anxiety. He had managed to stay awake like the other awakened, He had also experienced a vision. Could all of that just have been a ruthless joke by the gods to get his hopes up, only to reel him back into reality?

'No.. No.. calm down' He managed to get himself back into control. 'There's no way any such great being would have the time to play such jokes with a trivial person such as myself... I just have to concentrate.. remember the movement of that giant.. remember the words he spoke'.

Soon a calm trance set in, Esika, didn't notice that the world around him had all but disappeared. Right now the only thing in his field of vision was the field that the giant was in, and the giant himself.

The giant started for the second time. Moving with the same mystical technique that he had previously done. The giant once again spoke the same language that Esika couldn't understand. But, this time rather then the befuddled ignorance that he had experienced the first time, he could now feel a certain frequency or feeling coming from the mysterious words.

With each word spoken, the feeling got stronger. In the middle of it all, he began saying the same words that the giant had said. Feeling greater understanding every time he repeated.

The examiner, was currently looking at the still boy who seemed to have entered some kind of trance. It had already been a full ten minutes since the he had done so. He remained patient and simply waited for results, but the Nobles behind the boy where starting to get peeved.

Word's like "Get this trash out of here" and "Remove him" had already flew about. This caused him to look upon the Noble's with greater scorn then he already did. No matter where they were they never had any of the tact or discipline that was expected of them. They were merely hypocritical babies who were swaddled in luxury.

Just as he was going to silence the Nobles once again, he sensed for the briefest of moment's a disturbance in the air.

His eye's narrowed, this 'disturbance' held with it an incredible aura, one that simply commanded respect. Hurriedly shifting his eye's to where he had sensed this feeling, he couldn't help but be stunned.

A clear bright silver, pierced through the crystal ball. He couldn't see the shape of the color as it was so bright that he had to shift his eye's away.

Suddenly, the blood in his body shifted downwards. He could feel a certain magnificent force compelling him to his knees. Glancing around him he could see that the previous rowdy crowd of Nobles were now all on their faces, none having the strength to stand.

The boy who was the cause of this was still in a trance like state. Muttering's of a strange language vibrated the ground around him, causing pebbles to fly while breaking the earth around him.

Esika, was still repeating the words of the giant. As of now he could somewhat understand the lesser words of the giant. Words such as 'push' and 'pull' left his mouth, each time promoting a greater feeling of understanding.

As his understanding grew however, he could feel a gradual exhaustion effecting him. Soon enough, he was un-able to continue his speech. The giant's world around him began to collaspe and evaporate, but just as it did, he noticed for the briefest of seconds, under the giant's hair covered face a truly wonderous eye staring at him. He couldn't understand what color they were.

Finally as the world around him came back to normal, he looked around in confusion. All around people such as the Noble children were flat on their faces or people like the Examiner where on their knees. The only common expression on their faces while looking at him was one of awe and fear.

...
