Kimberly Singleton carefully reminded her.
Iris Warden took a sip of coffee and, looking at the proud skyscrapers standing opposite her, sighed and said—
"Don't worry, I understand Xavier Brooke. Even if the child Opal Moore is carrying is his, he won't wrong himself. He will just watch Opal Moore struggle, just as he once...watched me struggle..."
Upon hearing this, Kimberly suddenly realized that the shimmer in Iris's eyes seemed tinged with a hint of loneliness and sorrow. After a thought, she asked, "Madam, was Mr. Xavier Brooke unkind to you before?"
At that, Iris took a deep breath and a bitter smile crossed her lips—
"It's hard to say, our marriage was a union of convenience. There was no love to speak of; if we could've continued, of course, I would have been willing to carry on with him. But living with someone devoid of any warmth is painful. In the end, I couldn't bear such pain, and it may be better that we separated outright."
