Now the veil covering Daniel's thoughts was lifted, maybe by him, maybe by some unknown force, and his sorrow and solitude became so apparent to Mariana that she almost felt sorry for him.
"If love can extinguish its own flames when given enough time, why would I want enough time?" the pirate king said with a bitterly somber tone in his voice. "Why should I want that? Why would I crave the falling out, the boredom, the death of the spark that ignites our sheets? Why would I want a divorce? Do you know what that means? An eternity as a divorced man? Why? What is so tempting in that? Tell me, do you, too, want to become a bitter and loveless old hag? My life has been long enough as it is now. I do not want to extend it so that I will see everything I care about get drained from this world."
This sudden outburst was so brutally honest and jaded at the same time that the pirate queen found her jaw hanging open as she thought about the implications of his words.
