Chapter 7 - The Great Escape

After a while of resting, Virion gets awoken from his slumber. Even though he isn't fully rested, he feels a lot better now. Looking up at who it was calling out to him, he sees Oslo staring down at him.

"It's time kid, we're about to leave." Saying this Oslo holds out his hand for Virion to grab.

Groaning as he grabs Oslo's hand, Virion pulls himself up, still a bit groggy from the rest. Shaking his head to come back to his senses, he hears a loud voice from nearby.

"Listen up, this is our only chance to escape. I know it may be hard to hear this, and it's hard for me to say, but some of us, maybe even all of us, may die trying to get out of here. I understand that such a thing is very scary to you, but would you rather stay here? Would you rather die like a dog while hiding?! This is a chance to save the ones you love, your family, your kids, brothers, sisters, partners, this is for it all! Are you just going to give up and let them die?!" Lewis shouted out while standing on a makeshift stage that was made, trying his hardest to encourage the people he is about to lead.

"No!" Multiple people shouted out in response.

"Louder! Say it louder! Say it like it's the only thing you know how to do!"

"No!" Even more people joined in now.

"Then what are you going to do?! You're going to save them?! Save yourself?! For freedom!"

"For freedom!" Everyone had joined in at this point and was shouting along.

"Good! Everybody, follow Blake's lead!" Saying this, Lewis got off the stage and went over to where Blake's group was standing.

The speech seemed to have worked as the excitement in the air was palpable. Everyone was now ready to try their hardest to escape, it was nothing like the atmosphere from before. Lewis truly has a gift. Walking up onto the stage, Blake seemed like he was going to say something. As he does this, the shouting slowly calms down as they listen to him.

"I'm sure you all know me, I'm Blake. As Lewis said before, we aren't sure who, if anybody, will survive this. But we must try our hardest. We're going to head east, which is the shortest path out of the city. However, it's still an extremely long distance. I'm not a good speaker so this is all I will say. I will lead you all out of here as best as I can." After finishing his speech, Blake walked off the makeshift stage.

As soon as he walked off the stage, he began to walk out of the building, having his team follow him. Shortly after, the others began to follow as well, slowly piling out of the building and onto the streets.

"Let's go kid." Oslo said while patting him on the shoulder.

Nodding his head, Virion followed along. At this point, they're near the back of the group. Walking out into the street, they begin following the crowd. For a decent while, everything seemed to be going fine. The only thing that happened was a couple of encounters with the small creatures. However, they were all dealt with by Blake's team quite efficiently. The ones that got past them were handled by the sheer amount of people who were following behind. They may not have had quality, but they sure did have quantity.

Efficiently moving along, they continued killing the small creatures and moving as fast as possible. It seemed to be going quite smooth, too smooth. This is when they all heard gunshots and explosions nearby, it seemed to be right behind a couple buildings.

Assuming it was the military, they continue forward, trying to ignore the sounds. However, it seemed like they wouldn't be able to do that, because at the next moment a deafening roar sounded from nearby.

Hearing this, Virion saw what looked to be the same giant four legged creature from before, the one made completely out of fire, break through a building. As it burst through and onto the street, the creature along with rubble from the building landed on a group of people and seemed to have killed them instantly.

The creature seemed to pay no mind to them however as it spat out a beam of blue fire at the helicopter shooting at it. Just narrowly dodging the beam, the helicopter retreated a bit before continuing to fire explosives at it. It seems like they realized the bullets had no effect.

Getting hit by one of the rockets, the creature staggers a little bit but other than that it looks fine. It seems even explosives can't do much to the big ones.

"Run!" The group heard someone shout from the lead, assumingly Blake.

Not being stunned for long, the group began to run in the direction they've been going in. However, the creature kept being pushed back near the group, constantly stepping on more people and making buildings fall.

'What the hell are they doing?! Can't they see we're here?!' Virion thought to himself while running with the group, even though he was near the back at first, he had now managed to get close to the front.

Continuing to run, the group continued to encounter some packs of the small ones that could previously have been handled. But because of the panic most of the people were in, a lot of them happened to die in the chaos.

Having to fight a couple himself, Virion used his pocket knife to hold them off for the most part until someone joined in to help with the fight, or it focused on someone else. Even though he hated the fact that he couldn't help more people, he simply didn't have the strength to do anything like that. He alone was barely able to survive this mess.

'Do they ever stop coming?!' Virion thought to himself while weaving between people to continue running and dodging the creatures as best as he can.

"Watch out!" Another shout from the front, however this time, nobody knew what it meant.

All of a sudden a giant wave of blue fire rushed over the back of the group, incinerating them instantly. It seemed like the big one had taken care of the helicopter and was now focused on them.

"Split up! Keep running east!" Hearing this, everybody immediately ducked into buildings or alleyways, trying to get away from the giant creature chasing after them.

Virion decided to head for a building, he would go through the back and continue running through them for a while to try and lose it. In doing so, it seemed the creature hadn't followed him, but he could still hear the screams from behind him, it seemed like it had caught up with some of the unluckier few.

"Keep going." Oslo seemed to appear out of nowhere from behind Virion.

"Jesus man, don't do that!" Immediately freaking out, Virion recognizes it's Oslo and calms down.

"Let's go, the others will hold the thing off."

"I really hate you, you know?" Virion made his spite obvious but followed along anyways.

"I know, but it doesn't matter how much you hate me. We still have to survive. You'll understand one day."

Going silent after saying this the two of them continued running through buildings, occasionally running across a couple of the small monsters. They weren't much of an issue this time however, as Virion held off one while Oslo shot them from behind with his crossbow.

Virion didn't like to admit it, but he knew Oslo was really skilled at fighting, much more than himself, he could also feel himself getting more used to it as well.

After a bit more running, fighting, and brief rests, they could no longer hear any roars or screams. It seems like they had made it far enough away and were somewhat safe now. Deciding to head back out onto the main street to look for others, they carefully made their way around one of the buildings they just exited. Upon nearing the street though, they didn't immediately see anyone but they waited a couple seconds just in case. After waiting a bit though, nobody still appeared. Continuing with what they were doing before, Virion and Oslo ran through more buildings and alleyways, at this point, they could see a brief view of the sun when outside of a building.

'The suns rising, maybe we'll be safe.' Thinking this, Virion continued along.

After even more running and resting, the sun had finally begun to fully rise. It was no longer dark. Deciding to get back onto the main street, they headed out of the building they were resting in. Walking out onto the street, they didn't see any of the creatures, whether big or small. Nor do they hear any roars or the sounds of guns or rockets.

"Let's continue like this for now, if it gets bad we head back inside." Oslo informed Virion of what he was going to do.

"Sure, we can see more out here anyways." Virion agreed quite quickly.

As such, they began walking along the main road. However, they didn't encounter any of the creatures this time. They didn't even see a glimpse of one running away or hiding. Either they weren't out here, or they truly don't like the sun.

Continuing to walk along without encountering anybody or anything, they finally made it to the end of the city. At this point all they could see was an interstate leading further out, and empty plains only filled with trees as far as the eye could see. However, in some areas they could see the ground fractured and cracked, but it didn't look like something heavy being on it which fractured it, it looked like it fractured from something coming out of it.
