Chapter 59 - Massacre (1)

|That Night|

.

Rikiya Yotsubashi, also known by his alias Re-Destro, was seated in his office tower, reviewing his company reports, when an explosion occurred below in his privately controlled city. Quickly turning around in his mechanical chair and looking down through his office window, he saw several city blocks on fire. His normally composed features showed surprise. His mole in the HPSC said that they would attack within the next few days once the plans were finalized.

His first thoughts were that his mole lied to him and that they had changed sides or were captured and forced to give false information. But with a more careful look, he could see civilians fleeing the areas. That alone meant that this wasn't an attack by the HPSC. Before he could call down and ask what the situation was, as every hero followed his and Tomura's lead, more explosions occurred.

.

"What's going on down there?!" He shouted as he slammed his fist against the glass, cracking it.

.

That's when Tomoyasu Chikazoku, also known by the code name Skeptic, burst into the office panting.

.

"Sir!" He shouted as he fumbled with his laptop, "We're under attack!"

"I can see that!" Rikiya shouted as he pointed at the window, "Who is it and why aren't our soldiers doing anything?"

"No, someone is attacking our company and stealing all our profits!" Skeptic shouted, "Not only that, all our secrets are being outed one by one!"

"Then what caused those explosions?!" He shouted, slamming his fist against the desk in front of him, smashing it to pieces.

"What explosions?" Skeptic asked as he quickly used his laptop to bring up the security feed of the streets, "Nothing is going on down there."

.

Before Rikiya could tell him about them, one rocked the tower they were in. Skeptic quickly guessed what was happening and started to take over the security feed.

.

"We've been hacked!" Skeptic said as he managed to get the security feed back, "I can't find the source of the explosions and I can't get in contact with any of our members on the ground!"

"What's going on?!?!" Rikiya shouted as he felt his fear and anger rising.

"I don't know, but-"

.

Just as Skeptic was about to say something, the lights in the city were cut off. Not only that, it was as if all the electricity in the city died off in an instant. Only the glow of Skeptic's laptop illuminated the room now.

.

"Why aren't the backup generators turning on?!" Rikiya shouted in pure fear.

"I don't know..." Skeptic spoke quietly, his fear palpable.

.

More explosions rocked the city while the two of them were cowering in fear in the dark office.

.

Down below, on the streets, it was pandemonium.

.

Blood and bodies littered the streets, explosions echoed in the distance. Gunshots sounded out from every corner. The Soldiers of the Paranormal Liberation Front were at their wit's end as more and more bodies stacked up with no end in sight. Their leaders lay dead as more and more soldiers dropped like flies.

Every time one of the soldiers tried to rally their fellow soldiers, they died a gruesome death. Either by their head exploding or by having a massive, gaping hole in their chest. Some were lucky when they died a quick death. Others were not.

To the survivors and the civilians, this was hell on earth.

To the one that started this all, this was just another Monday to them.

.

Finally, one of the nine lieutenants of the PLF, codenamed Trumpet, died rallying what was left of the troops. With his dying breath, he ordered a mass charge at the enemy who took his life. As his eyes closed for the final time, he witnessed the gathered soldiers get mowed down by red lasers.

.

'What God did we anger to warrant this?' That was his last thought.

.

Soon, the force of 100,000 soldiers was cut down to half. Four of its nine lieutenants were either dead or dying. The culprit was far from finished. Their deeds not even halfway done.

For them, this wasn't a war. This wasn't a slaughter. And this wasn't just some random mass murder.

This was a chore. Like one would compare to taking out the trash.

And worse yet, this was all justified in their eyes.

They had hurt and tortured someone they loved.

And this was just the beginning.
