It took Arthur Seventeen tries before he actually managed to grind the back of the Claw by a little bit.
"There we go," Arthur said with a smirk.
During these attempts, Arthur wasn't just repeating them exactly the same. That would be wrong as it would change nothing. What he was doing in fact was to adjust his force of grinding every time.
He needed it to be just enough that the surface of the Giant Dire Sewer Rat claw would be affected, but the overall integrity of the claw was still fine. He didn't wish to damage the claws themselves after all.
