Chapter 4: Bonds of Blood and Light
Scene 1: A New Dawn
The priest academy rose like a monument to divinity, its ivory spires piercing the dawn sky. Nero clutched his enrollment scroll, its parchment crisp under his trembling fingers. Beside him, Ledger stood with folded arms, his sharp gaze scanning the nobles who drifted past in silken robes.
"Remember," Ledger murmured, "this place thrives on secrets. Keep yours close."
Nero nodded, though his eyes betrayed awe. The scent of incense and polished stone enveloped him as they stepped into the grand hall. Whispers trailed in their wake—commoner, charity case, orphan. Nero's jaw tightened, but his resolve burned brighter. Mother's medicine. A roof that doesn't leak. This is worth any sneer.
Ledger guided him to the "quarters"—a sunlit suite of marble and mahogany, where Luna stood framed by gilded windows. Her pallor had softened, cheeks warmed by royal care.
"Mr. Ledger," she said, bowing. Her voice, though frail, carried steel. "You've given us more than a home. You've given hope."
Ledger's eyes narrowed. Beneath her gratitude, he sensed it—a flicker of latent magic, raw and untamed. Namakami blood runs deep.
Scene 2: Whispers of the Namakami
Nightfall draped the academy gardens in silver. Ledger found Luna beneath a blooming jasmine arbor, her hands clasped around a steaming teacup.
"We are Namakami," she said abruptly, as if the words had clawed their way free.
Ledger stiffened. The name echoed from forbidden scrolls—a clan erased by the Abyss's tendrils centuries ago. Survivors were myths.
"My son…" Luna's voice cracked. "His mind… it hungers. Like his father's did. When Leo fought—"
"The Abyss took him," Ledger finished quietly. "Yet you trust me with Nero?"
Luna's laugh was bitter. "I see souls, Ledger. Yours is… unmarred." She leaned closer, moonlight catching the tears in her eyes. "Teach him control. Before the Gates claim him as they did Leo."
Scene 3: The Spark Within
Days blurred into ritual. Nero knelt in the sanctum, chanting hymns that resonated in his bones. The High Priestess observed, her gaze piercing.
"Your soul is a blade," she intoned, tracing a sigil over his brow. "Sharpen it, and it will cut both ways."
Nero faltered. "The Abyss?"
"And those who court it."
Meanwhile, Ledger combed through the academy's archives. The Namakami's power wasn't mere talent—it was a bridge to the Divine Gates. Fragmented texts warned: The Gates demand harmony. A mind unclouded. A heart unbroken.
A shout shattered his focus.
Scene 4: Flames and Fury
In the sparring courtyard, a noble boy sneered, shoving Nero against a pillar. "Mudblood. Know your place."
Heat flared in Nero's chest—a wildfire begging release. His fingers twitched.
Crack.
A spark leapt from his palm, scorching the stone. Students scattered, screaming. The High Priestess swept in, her chant dousing the flames.
Nero collapsed, blood dripping from his nose. Ledger arrived to find him shaking, skin fever-hot.
"I… couldn't stop it," Nero gasped.
Ledger's pulse raced. The Gates stir. And the Abyss watches.
Scene 5: A Mother's Resolve
Luna met Ledger at the garden's edge at dusk, her face gaunt but fierce. "He must never know," she whispered. "What Leo sacrificed to seal the Gates."
Ledger frowned. "He'll ask. The boy's no fool."
"Then lie." Her grip tightened on his arm. "If the Namakami power awakens fully, the Abyss will hunt him. Keep him safe… even from himself."
Inside, Nero knelt by his bedside, whispering to the stars. "Thank you… friend," he murmured to the void, his faith in the nameless deity unwavering. Somewhere, deep in the earth, shadows coiled.
Soon, they hissed.
