Rick stirred awake, roused by the soft sound of restrained sobbing. As his eyes blinked open, the first light of morning filtered through the window, casting a warm glow across the room, and he felt its gentle warmth hit his face.
Groggy and disoriented, he tried to make sense of the scene around him. In the blurry haze of his half-awake state, he saw Jemimah standing by the bed, her back turned, shoulders trembling ever so slightly.
As he became more alert, he noticed she was holding his phone, her knuckles white as she clutched it tightly. Her shoulders tensed before she silently placed the phone back down on the bed and hurried out of the room, a hand over her mouth as if to hold back her tears.
