Chapter 16 - Parallel

Before their incredulous eyes, the hero begins tearing off his skin with his delicate hands, covering the ground with rivers of blood that stain the hopes of our disbelieving candidate for viceroy. The hero's features start to deform, giving way to the visage of Charles. With fury, Charles grabs the viceroy by the neck, while the eyes of his beloved son reflect an expression of hatred that embodies the most lucid and sickening dreams of Charles.

Suddenly, Charles decides it's time to carry out his revenge, but before doing so, he asks Robert what he should do with his father. Robert refuses to cooperate with Charles, yet he hasn't forgiven his father either. Charles begins to tear the viceroy's head off with all the fury he can muster. In his eyes, only the pain of losing his wife remains; there's no humanity left in Charles.

Charles completes his revenge and begins to drink the viceroy's blood. Robert laments his father's death, tears emerging from deep within his soul. Charles cannot understand why Robert mourns the death of a tyrant and fool like his father. Furious, Charles tries to kill Robert but is overcome by fear and pity for someone who has just lost his father.

Although Charles has carried out his revenge, something inside him troubles him. He believes the only way to quell this feeling is to take Robert's life to compensate for the death of the son he loved so dearly.

He attempts to sever Robert's head with a blood-stained sword. Just before striking the blow to end his life, he sees the innocence in Robert's eyes—the innocence Charles himself has lost. Memories of happy days with his beloved family flood his mind: the nights of passion with his wife, the playful afternoons with his young son.

Horrified, Charles drops the weapon and stares at his blood-stained hands. He imagines Juliet crying at how her beloved husband has turned into this despair-ridden beast. Tears begin to stream from Charles' eyes. The once monstrous figure with immense strength has become a small farmer longing for his family.

Charles starts trembling like a frightened child. Suddenly, he feels arms embracing his head. To his surprise, he sees Robert comforting him, believing Charles is just another victim of racial segregation and that he can now move on with his life since his revenge is complete.

Now, Charles has lost the will to fight. The once fearful farmer who ventured into a new world is now nothing but a broken man with no purpose to live for. Wiping away his tears, he asks Robert what he should do next.

Robert helps him stand and suggests traveling to the continent of the subhumans, as a frenzy has erupted following news of the rebirth of the King of the Underworld. An old tale mentions that anyone who dares rise from the ashes has the right to rule over those mired in misery.

Charles thanks Robert for giving him a new purpose in life. He begins his journey but notices Robert accompanying him. He asks why Robert has decided to follow him. Robert firmly states that he will serve Charles in this life and the next because Charles spared his life.

Charles, incredulous, asks again if Robert doesn't hate him for violently taking his father's life. Robert shakes his head and explains that he knows his father wasn't a good man, though he regrets his death. His father caused pain to his new friend and many others who were unfortunate enough to meet him.

The two begin their journey toward the lands devastated by constant wars over a throne that has been vacant for decades.

Meanwhile, the sacred knights of the church arrive at the village now known as Ground Zero, as traces remain of the resurgence of a powerful infernal being. Among them is Calamity, said to be one of the weakest sacred knights, yet capable of splitting a mountain with his bare hands. He is also rumored to have slain thousands of infernals who tried to seize control of the border between Saint John and the desolate lands belonging to the infernals.

He laughs heartily, thinking of anyone foolish enough to violate the taboo imposed on all creatures in this world. He shouts that his heart has begun to burn, eager to hunt down a powerful infernal.

Back to Charles, he tries to suppress his kingly aura to avoid trouble while crossing into infernal territory. After several days, they arrive at a border town that has been ravaged. Robert explains that this desolate land was once a thriving town, but the sacred knights plunged it into misery.

"All I can see are children dying of hunger," says Charles, wiping away a few tears. Suddenly, he notices a father tearing off his arm and cooking it over a small fire of dry wood he found on the ground.

Seeing this act of love reminds Charles of his deceased son. He begins to ponder how to break this cycle of hatred and death. Suddenly, he recalls his ability to alter parts of his body at will. He cuts off one of his arms, transforming it into a kind of slime that multiplies when cut and is also edible.

Robert joyfully informs the few remaining villagers that they can raise these slimes as livestock and feed themselves. The villagers, filled with hope, devour the slime, which continues to multiply. The father collapses to his knees, tears streaming down his face as he thanks Charles for the gift that cost him an arm. The man introduces himself as the mayor of the decrepit town.

"I have decided to start my reign here, in this small town," says Charles with a faint smile. Robert is thrilled but feels uneasy. Holding a sword, he asks Charles if he's certain, as the sacred knights are likely plotting against him since his very existence violates every taboo imposed by the god of this world.

Charles lets out a long laugh, but his expression quickly turns to rage. "This town will now be my home. Anyone who dares disturb its peace will pay with their life. I am no longer a simple farmer; I am something inhuman that will destroy their hopes and engulf them in terror."
