The little guy stood on a small stool, hung himself on the doorknob, and only then heard a "click" as the iron door opened.
Outside, it was pitch black.
The little guy had been in the boiler room for a year, and he was familiar with every corner of it.

Little Danny groped his way through the darkness towards the boiler, calling out continuously.
In the empty Machinery City, his tender and weak call echoed.
But no one responded to him.
Little Danny was getting scared.
He started to jog along.
Finally, he saw the familiar and towering steam boilers.
There was still some unburned coal in the boilers, and the faint firelight illuminated more than half of the dilapidated boiler room.
The ground was damp, stained with dried blood.
Uncle Kole, Uncle Gerant, Big Jim...
Bodies were everywhere.
Little Danny was terrified, the firelight illuminating his pale little face.
"Grandpa! Grandpa!"
