People frequently blame the failures of the French and Germans on "General Winter"—the brutal cold of Russian winters, which can reach fifty degrees below zero. In reality, there are many factors in these strategic failures, with the harsh environment being just one of them. What truly caused the Corsican dwarf and the Austrian with a small mustache to meet their end on Russian soil was the lack of logistics systems and resources. That is, the French and Germans waged war on the Eastern Front based on resource needs, but the resources they held—ranging from reserve human resources, the size of combat forces, military industry, and so forth—were insufficient to support such a grand war. They were destined to collapse from exhaustion before achieving their final goals.
