Well since Woden was in town, we decided to leave him to his own devices. He'd find us later if he were in town. I thought long and hard about the teaching gig chreshield talked about. I didn't know if that would be the right path for someone like me who's spent a major part of his previous life on the battlefield. I was deciding to be a mercenary to get more money, but taking care of a child while being a mercenary is no ordinary task.
A stable income from teaching would be beneficial for Joyle's growth while also helping me learn about what had happened during the time I wasn't alive. In the end I decided to take up the teaching job but chreshield told me "First, you need to fix up your damn attire and also you need proper identification."
I remembered Fallenhyde having his identification somewhere, I checked my backpack and found it. Fallenhyde was a 24-year-old guy physically. Black hair, black eyes, pretty long hair and having these black characteristics made him unusual because most noble families had defining characteristics to them such as different hair colors and such. The identification card also showed that I was born in a village in the boonies and had travelled to the city for work. Damn this was a pretty useful ID card. Now about the dressing part, we had no money other than chreshield's small portion. It wouldn't be enough.
I had been collecting a few herbs and other such materials, the sap from the trees, the dormant larvae of rare bugs I could find in the wild. I didn't know how much these would go for so I collected a bunch and luckily enough, Fallenhyde had a Collapsar bag. These had a large storage capable of storing enormous amounts of items in this magic pouch. I hadn't been able to figure out the maximum capacity of this pouch but it's good that Fallenhyde had this ancient relic on hand.
We went to the market and found the streets bustling with people. The shops were full of different items on sale, some behind glass panes separating them from the outer world while others in the plain sight for the people to check and buy. fabrics from different lands were hung on the walls and on strings, while also being rolled into bundles for people to buy in bulk. Different kinds of fragrances emanated from a corner of the market, while another had the aroma of a variety of different foods. We had something to eat because Joyle wouldn't stop nagging me for food, and that was a dent on our expenses. She had a few pieces of biscuits in the shape of different monsters, me and chreshield shared a few pieces of chicken slathered with special honey sauce and grilled to a char. Arthold was fed simple milk. Was it just me or is Arthold growing larger than he was a few days ago?
We finally reached the medicinal and herb shop "Gracina's Herbal". We went inside and a bell rang as it was attached to the door to detect customers. Or intruders. Inside an elf was arranging herbs and bottles of medicines along the shelves and she saw us, she got down from the ladder she came and greeted us. "Welcome to Gracina's herbal. We sell different medical and herbs for your needs. You can browse what you need and bring'em to the counter." Her eyes seemed to be those a business man and I swear she could smell the poverty off us.
I set my Collapsar bag on the table and spoke "I'm actually here to sell a few items." She rolled her eyes and then told us to drop all the items. I pretty much turned the bag upside down and dropped everything I had. It covered the entirety of the counter and started dropping down. She was surprised and instantly changed her attitude. "These are rare items that even regular explorers find difficulty in discovering. That's the horn of a rhinoceros crab, the sap from a millennium tree and so many of those, branches from different herbal trees. These could be sold for quite the price but how do I accept it from you, there's no proof that these were legitimately obtained."
I told her the same sob story of me returning from the frontlines of a war in a distant country and that my wife had died yada yada and she instantly bought everything. I made a total profit of 1,76,38,987 silver coins, roughly 96,276 gold coins. It was enough for us to survive for a year excluding additional costs. I guess there was no other choice but to apply for the teaching job. As we walked the streets we decided to stay at "Henry's Inn". Most inns were cheap and we could cover the costs of our food at the inn too so it was a done deal. We bought a double room with single beds in each. The rooms were cozy and had a warm Prescence. After sleeping wherever I could find for the past few months on the boat and the forest, I was relieved like hell to get a good night's sleep. Joyle slept beside me like a small baby, which she was.
I tried to close my eyes, but the nightmares from my previous life wouldn't stop reappearing. I couldn't get shut eye even in such a good bed. I took another look at Joyle and another look outside. My years of time spent on the battlefield had honed my senses even in another body. My brain remembered every move I had done but my body was still weak. The next morning, we got out of our rooms and headed down to the lobby where we found Chreshield eating some fried fish and Arthold sucking on some milk from a bottle. I guessed the fish food was a specialty of this inn so I bought a plate too.
Then I asked chreshield "the job you were talking about as a professor, where is it anyway?".
Here eyes looked at me in disbelief, "you as a teacher? Ha, I just told that in the spur of the moment cuz I remembered seeing a few posters everywhere. Well, you look dead serious so I'll tell you anyway."
After a long pause, she pointed at a poster on the wall. It said "Academy of Marten, looking for professors to teach the future of our world. All races accepted, register before 25th of the 7th month."
Wait what even was the date? I asked chreshield but she herself didn't know nor did she care. Next, I asked the bartender a sweet girl in her 20s who's probably the daughter of the inn master about the date and she told us "It's the 25th of July." Oh yeah, I took Joyle in my arms, grabbed a piece of loaf and ran.
