The tension in the room began to ease, though the atmosphere remained heavy. Melissa stood quietly, taking in the sea of emotions around her.
She felt the weight of their pain and anger, but she also felt a flicker of hope—hope that maybe, just maybe, she could make things right.
As she wiped her tears, she noticed two small figures approaching her. One was a boy, no older than eight, with bandages covering parts of his body. Beside him was a girl, slightly older, maybe nine, with big, kind eyes that held warmth.
Despite their injuries, they walked with determination, their small faces set with seriousness, they were Tatsuya and his sister Nezumi.
Melissa straightened, her heart pounding. She wasn't sure what to expect, but she braced herself.
The boy stopped in front of her, looking up at her with wide, innocent eyes. "So you're his daughter, Melissa Shield, right?" he asked, his voice small but steady.
Melissa nodded hesitantly, crouching down so she could meet his gaze. "Yes, I am," she said gently.
The boy glanced at the girl beside him, who gave him a little nod before looking at Melissa. "Melissa san," Tatsuya said, his voice wavering slightly but still carrying a sense of purpose. "We… we got hurt because of your dad."
Melissa's breath hitched, guilt washing over her again, as she remembered what Izuku had told about them and their sufferings. She opened her mouth to speak, but Tatsuya quickly added, "But we don't hate you."
Melissa blinked, startled, even though they had spoken before. "You don't?" she asked softly, still surprised by their kindness.
Tatsuya shook his head, glancing at his sister again for reassurance. "No… I can't hate you. 'Cause… 'cause I have her," he said, pointing at Nezumi. His small hand rested on her shoulder, and his eyes softened. "Nezumi's still here. She's alive. That's what matters most to me."
Melissa's lips trembled as she tried to hold back tears. "But after everything my dad did... how can you not be mad at me?"
Nezumi stepped closer, her voice quiet but firm. "Big sister Melissa, we've told you before—it's not your fault," she said gently. "Big Brother Izuku saved us. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't be here. I wouldn't be here. I would have died, consumed by worry for my little brother.
Even in that horrible place, when I had every reason to give up and let go, I held on. I had to—because of Tatsuya. Whenever those dark, awful thoughts crept into my mind, I forced myself to think about him.
What would happen to Tatsuya if I wasn't there? Who would take care of him? Would they love him like I do? Would they fight for him to have a good life the way I would?
Those thoughts kept me going when I thought I couldn't take another step. And now, thanks to Big Brother Izuku, I finally have my little brother back.
Big Brother Izuku told us it was you who helped him find the base and rescue us. He said you're still helping him, even now. That's what really matters, Melissa. You're trying to fix things.
My dad was a criminal too—a petty one, but still a criminal. I know how it feels to carry the weight of what someone else has done.
But you don't have to blame yourself for your father's actions. You didn't do it. You didn't even know about it. So don't let that guilt consume you. We could never hate you for something you had no control over."
Melissa's tears finally spilled over, but this time they weren't from guilt or fear. They were from gratitude. She wiped her face quickly, her voice trembling. "Thank you," she said softly.
"Thank you for forgiving me and for believing in me. I promise, I'll do everything I can to help make things right. I'll try to fix what my dad broke, even if it takes forever."
Tatsuya gave a small smile, his voice quiet. "We believe in you, big sister Melissa. And you're not all by yourself. You have big brother Izuku, and he's really strong. He'll help you."
Melissa glanced back at Izuku, who was watching with a gentle smile. His presence felt like a safety net, giving her strength when she needed it most.
Izuku stepped forward, his hands in his pockets. "Didn't I tell you they'd forgive you?" he said, his tone light, a playful glint in his eyes.
Melissa nodded, her lips trembling as she let out a soft laugh through her tears. "You did," she whispered. "You were right."
Izuku crouched beside her, placing a hand on her shoulder. His emerald eyes were warm and full of encouragement. "This is just the beginning, Melissa. Keep going. Keep showing them who you really are. You're already on the right path."
Melissa wiped her eyes again, this time with a small but determined smile on her face. She looked at Tatsuya and Nezumi, her voice steady. "Thank you," she said sincerely. "I won't let you down. I'll do everything I can to help."
Nezumi stepped forward and gave Melissa a quick hug, her small arms wrapping around Melissa's shoulders. "We know you will," she said softly.
Tatsuya gave her a shy smile and nodded. "Yeah… we believe in you."
Melissa wiped her eyes once more, taking a deep breath. This moment was just the beginning—she knew there was so much more to do. Turning to Izuku, she nodded firmly, her resolve shining through. "I want to do more, Izuku. I need to do more. For them… for everyone."
Izuku's warm smile grew as he placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Then let's get started."
---
The next few days were a whirlwind of effort for Melissa. She worked tirelessly, driven by the need to make things right. She organised and coordinated with rescue teams and medical personnel to ensure that everyone affected by her father's actions was accounted for, alive or dead.
One of her main goals became helping the people of I-Island find closure. For those whose loved ones had perished, she made sure their remains were recovered and returned to their families with respect and care.
For those who were still alive but missing, Melissa spent countless hours using all of her mind and tech to find them and also reassuring their families that every effort was being made to reunite them.
---
In a quiet corner of I-Island's makeshift relief center, Melissa sat across from an elderly couple. The woman clutched a handkerchief tightly, her wrinkled hands trembling. Her husband sat beside her, his expression stoic but his eyes filled with pain.
Melissa spoke softly, her tone gentle but firm. "Mr. and Mrs. Tanaka, I want you to know that we've found your son. He's alive, but he's injured. He's being treated right now, and as soon as he's stable, we'll bring him back to you as soon as he recovers."
The elderly woman's lips quivered as tears began to spill down her cheeks. "He's… he's alive?" she whispered.
Melissa nodded, reaching out to take the woman's hand in hers. "Yes, he's alive. And I promise, I'll do everything I can to make sure he gets back to you safely."
The woman clutched Melissa's hand tightly, her tears falling freely. "Thank you… thank you so much…"
Her husband, though silent, placed a hand over Melissa's in a rare show of emotion. "We never thought we'd see him again. I give you my blessings, may God give you all the happiness in the world, along with strength and courage to handle your sufferings"
Melissa smiled softly, her own eyes glistening with tears. "I'll never give up. None of us will. I'll make sure to work tirelessly and rest only after your son is back to you."
---
In another area, Melissa stood before a small group of grieving families. Her voice was steady, though her heart ached for them.
"For those of you whose loved ones we've lost, I can't begin to express how deeply sorry I am," she said, bowing deeply. "I know I can't undo what happened, but I want you to know that I'm working to ensure their remains are treated with the utmost respect. We will return them to you so you can have the closure you deserve."
A middle-aged woman in the crowd spoke up, her voice shaking. "And how do we know you'll keep that promise? How do we know you're not just saying what we want to hear?"
Melissa straightened, her eyes meeting the woman's. "Because I'll make sure of it myself. I've already started working with the recovery teams.
I've personally ensured that everyone we've found is being identified and returned to their families. And I'll keep going until every single person is accounted for."
Her sincerity was evident in her voice, and as the crowd watched her, they saw the determination in her eyes. This wasn't someone making empty promises—this was someone who was truly committed to making amends.
The woman who had spoken hesitated, then nodded slowly. "Alright. I'll trust you, Melissa Shield. But only because I can see you're trying."
Melissa nodded. "Thank you ma'am . I won't let you down."
---
Word began to spread across I-Island about Melissa's efforts. People saw her working tirelessly, skipping meals and sleep to ensure that nothing was overlooked.
They saw her comforting grieving families, organizing search teams, and coordinating medical care for survivors as well as apologising to every single family that suffered because of her father without skipping anyone.
"She's nothing like her father," one man said, watching Melissa speak to a group of volunteers.
"No, she's not," another woman agreed. "She could have hidden away or sulked about what her dad did, but instead, she's out here, fixing his mess."
"It's like she's trying to carry the weight of all his sins herself," an older man added. "I don't know about you, but I respect that."
---
In a quieter moment, Melissa returned to the Shield family's estate. The once-proud home now felt hollow, a symbol of her father's betrayal. She stood in the office, staring at her father's desk.
"I'll fix this," she whispered to herself. "No matter how long it takes, I'll make this right."
Izuku entered the room quietly, his presence a calming force. "You're already doing so much, Melissa," he said. "The people see it. They know how hard you're working."
Melissa turned to him, her eyes determined. "It's not enough, Izuku. I need to keep going. For them. For everyone my father has hurt."
Izuku smiled softly. "And you will. I believe in you, Melissa. They do too, but don't forget to rest a bit, if you feel freshed then your efforts will feel more genuine and you will be able to give your all."
Melissa nodded, her resolve strengthening once more. She wouldn't stop—not until every life her father had affected was accounted for. And with Izuku by her side, she knew she could do it.
Izuku gently guided Melissa to take a break from everything. He helped her refresh, leading her to the bathroom and staying by her side.
They shared a bath together, with Izuku carefully cleaning her body, his touch gentle and comforting. He massaged her shoulders and back, easing the tension she had been carrying for days.
Afterward, he prepared a warm, hearty meal for her, ensuring she focused only on relaxing. Melissa tried to protest, but Izuku's firm yet kind reassurance made her let go, if only for a little while.
Once she had eaten and felt a little more at ease, Izuku stayed by her side, guiding her to bed. He wrapped her in his arms, holding her close. His embrace was warm and protective, a silent promise that she wasn't alone.
As she lay against him, Melissa felt the overwhelming weight of her emotions surface. Tears began to fall, and Izuku was there, quietly soothing her. He stroked her hair, whispered words of comfort, and simply let her cry. He wanted her to know that if she needed someone to lean on, he was there for her.
Izuku stayed with her, never letting go, making sure she felt safe and cared for in the hollow, empty house. He held her close until she finally drifted off to sleep, her head resting against his chest.
Even as she slept, Izuku remained by her side, ensuring she knew, in her heart, that she wasn't facing this burden alone.
