Arata looked up at Kurama, raising an eyebrow as the giant fox lowered his massive head, clearly confused.
"How do you know my name?" Kurama asked, his deep voice filled with suspicion. "And who are you?"
Kurama was shocked. This human… called him Kurama? That name was given to him by his father, the Sage of the Six Paths, Hagoromo Otsutsuki. Aside from his nine siblings, Asura, and Indra, no one else should know it.
So how did this human, Arata Senju, know?
Doubt flickered in Kurama's eyes. But more than that—he felt something unsettling.
Arata smirked slightly. "No need to look so shocked, Kurama. I'm just here to talk."
Kurama's eyes narrowed. "Talk? Hah! Humans always say that."
His deep voice rumbled through the sewer-like mindscape.
"You humans are evil. The power my father gave you—Ninshū—you turned it into a tool for war. It's disgusting."
Kurama's anger wasn't baseless. When Hagoromo entrusted the tailed beasts with the duty of guiding humanity, they tried. But what did humans do?
They turned against them.
They called them demons.
And the only human disciple Kurama ever trusted? He was killed by humans.
That's when Kurama began to hate humanity as a whole.
But there was something else.
Kurama could sense something inside Arata—a power similar to Kaguya herself.
His breath hitched, despite not needing to breathe. A subconscious reaction.
"I do not want to become the Ten-Tails again," Kurama thought, unease creeping in.
Two possibilities ran through his mind:
This human possessed a power similar to his father, Hagoromo.
Or worse—this human had power similar to Kaguya.
And yet… when Kurama looked at Arata, he saw something else—a hint of hope.
Arata grinned. "Hey, don't be like that. I just want to be friends with you. That's all."
Kurama's ears twitched.
"Friends?"
Arata nodded, still smiling.
Kurama scoffed, turning his head away with a tsundere-like attitude. "Is that how you treat your 'friend'? By locking them in a cage?"
Arata chuckled. "Well… fair point.
"Hey, all I want to say is… I need your help."
Kurama narrowed his eyes. "Huh? Help? What do you want from me, human?"
Arata crossed his arms and smirked. "I want to change this world."
Kurama scoffed. "Tch, change the world? You humans are always talking about that."
Arata continued, ignoring him. "You already know how war works in this world. Humans kill each other, destroy their own kind—for land, for money… for things they created themselves."
Kurama stayed silent, but he agreed. He had seen it countless times—how humans would slaughter each other over nothing.
"But I want a world where people can live in peace… with each other and with the Tailed Beasts," Arata said.
Kurama froze for a moment.
His father's words echoed in his mind. "One day, a child of prophecy will unite all the Tailed Beasts."
Is this brat… the one?
Arata continued, "I know the truth. You were separated from the Ten-Tails by the Sage of Six Paths. Each of you has your own consciousness, your own emotions. I know you've done nothing wrong."
Kurama clenched his teeth.
"But the moment humans discover you, they either want to control you, steal your power, or destroy you out of fear. They don't see you as living beings… just weapons."
Kurama's eyes darkened.
"And what choice do you have?" Arata sighed. "Fight back… and they call you a demon. A monster."
Kurama's mind drifted to the past.
He tried. He really tried to talk to humans.
But what did they do?
"Demon!"
"Monster!"
"Go away!"
They feared him. Hated him.
Once, he had trusted a human—shared his knowledge with them—but what did they do?
They killed him.
Labeled him a demon follower and erased his existence.
Kurama gritted his teeth, his claws digging into the ground.
He was tired of it.
And now, this human… this Arata… was telling him he understood him WHAT A JOKE?
Arata continued, "So that's why I want to be friends with you. Only when we become friends... only then will I stand on my own feet."
He grinned. "You can feel it, right? The power inside me?"
Kurama narrowed his eyes.
Yes, he could feel it.
This brat… had the potential to surpass even his father, the Sage of Six Paths. Maybe even her—their grandmother, Kaguya, the one their father had sealed away.
Kurama's breath hitched slightly. That much potential… in one human?
Meanwhile, Arata kept talking. "I don't like this world full of wars. I just want a peaceful world. So, Kurama, will you be my friend?"
Arata looked straight at him, eyes full of determination.
Kurama huffed. "Tch, humans always talk about peace… then start wars the next day."
But before he could say anything else, Arata had already freed himself from Kurama's grip and climbed back on top of his head.
Then, he jumped onto Kurama's nose.
Now standing right in front of Kurama's massive eyes, he stared deep into them.
"I mean it," Arata said. "I really want to be your friend."
Kurama narrowed his eyes. "Friends? Peace? Are you sure you're not just saying this to take advantage of me?"
His voice rumbled through the air. "To use my power?"
For a second, Arata saw something in Kurama's eyes—something rare.
Doubt.
…And maybe a tiny bit of hope.
Arata sighed. "No. I'm working hard to make this happen. And my first step… is you."
Kurama stayed silent.
Arata scratched his head and continued, "I want you to be my best friend, Kurama. Because honestly… I don't have any friends either."
Kurama blinked. "Hah?"
Arata smirked bitterly. "People look at me like I'm some kind of messiah. Like I'm just the future clan head of the Senju. But no one sees me as just… Arata."
Kurama listened quietly.
"Everyone who tries to be my friend… they always want something from me." Arata clenched his fists. "But you? You don't care about my status. You just hate humans."
He grinned.
"So, what do you say, Kurama? Will you be my first best friend?"
