The night stretched on in eerie silence, broken only by the distant echoes of the soldiers searching the woods. My body was stiff with tension, my mind spinning in endless circles, trying to anticipate the next move. We had a brief moment of safety, but I knew better than to relax. The stakes were higher than ever now. They wouldn't stop coming after us. They couldn't afford to.
I glanced over at Mara. She was still watching the darkness outside, her back to the window, but her gaze was distant—her mind racing through possible outcomes, plans, contingencies. She had always been the strategist, the one with the vision. But even she had to be feeling the weight of everything pressing down on us.
I walked to the small corner of the cabin, trying to give her some space, but my mind kept racing. We had the files—the truth—but truth alone wasn't enough. The people needed to see it, understand it, act on it. The machine that ran this world wasn't going to crumble just because we exposed its gears.
The only way to bring it down was to light a fire so bright it would burn everything in its path.
I looked back at Mara, who hadn't moved. She was always the one with the plan, the one who kept pushing forward even when it seemed impossible. But now, even she was quiet, her lips pressed into a thin line as she stared into the distance.
I approached her slowly, not wanting to interrupt her thoughts but unable to stay silent any longer. "What now?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
She turned slowly, her eyes locking with mine. For a moment, she just stared at me, as if weighing something unspoken between us. Then she nodded slightly.
"We have to make them come to us," she said, her voice steady, but there was an underlying tension in her tone. "The files—they're a weapon, but not enough on their own. We need to give them something more. We need to show the world who we are, what we've done. We need to become the story."
I blinked, the weight of her words settling into me. "You're talking about making ourselves targets. Even bigger ones than we already are."
She didn't flinch. "Exactly. If we stay hidden, we're nothing. Just whispers in the wind. But if we stand tall—if we make ourselves the face of this, the face of what's wrong—we can't be ignored. They'll have to deal with us. And when they do, the world will be watching."
I swallowed, trying to process everything she was saying. She was right, of course. If we didn't make our stand, if we didn't force the world to see what we had uncovered, it would all be for nothing. The power of the system came from its ability to silence and ignore. We couldn't let them do that.
"But how?" I asked, the question hanging heavy in the air. "How do we turn ourselves into the story without getting crushed under it?"
Mara's eyes softened just for a moment, but her resolve didn't waver. "We make them come to us. We leak the final part of the files. But this time, we don't hide. We're going public—full exposure. We get ahead of them, get ahead of the spin they'll try to put on it. We don't just give them the truth. We show them the cost. The price we're willing to pay for it."
I felt a shiver run down my spine. We were going to burn everything. All the bridges. All the connections. We'd be out in the open, with no way of retreating.
But then again, there was no retreating anymore.
I exhaled sharply. "Alright. We'll do it. But how do we make sure it reaches the people? How do we make sure it doesn't get buried?"
Mara's smile was small, but there was fire in it. "We make it impossible to ignore. We get the attention of the media, the public, the people who have the power to amplify our message. We make them see that we are the pulse of what's real. We're the ones fighting for something worth fighting for."
I nodded slowly, feeling the weight of her words settle in. The media would be key. The world was watching. If we could get the right people behind us, the power of the system would start to crumble. It was risky—impossibly so. But it was the only shot we had.
"We need a plan," I said quietly, more to myself than to her. "A real one. We can't just throw it out there and hope for the best."
"We already have a plan," Mara said, a steely edge to her voice. "We've been planning this from the start. We need to get in contact with a few trusted individuals—people who can help amplify our message, people with access to larger platforms. Then, we release everything at once. The files. The proof. And our story."
Her words hung in the air, and I could feel the weight of them settle over me. It was no longer just about survival. It was about changing the game. Exposing everything.
But there was one thing that still haunted me. One thing I couldn't ignore.
"And what happens after?" I asked. "When it's all out there, when the truth is exposed… what happens to us?"
Mara's expression hardened, and for a split second, I saw something dark in her eyes—something that spoke of inevitability, of a world we had no control over.
"I don't know," she said quietly. "But we've made our choice. And we don't go back now."
I stared at her, trying to read her, to understand the weight behind her words. But there was no time for second-guessing. No time to turn back.
We were already in this. And now, we were going to finish it.
We spent the next few hours gathering the final pieces of our plan—securing connections, double-checking the files, and making sure the information was airtight. Every decision had to be precise, every step calculated. We had no room for error.
By the time the first light of dawn began to filter through the trees, we were ready. The moment had come.
Mara took a deep breath, and for the first time since we'd started this journey, I saw a flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. But it was gone in an instant, replaced by that same cold determination.
"We do this now," she said, her voice firm.
I didn't hesitate. Neither of us did.
It was time to step into the light. The world would know the truth. And we would make sure they could never forget it.
