I had always known Vickson to be a fool, he'd practically surrendered his life to Hailey, but what he did now was the worst! I meant that the woman does not even remember anything about their children or the fact that she was actually married to Vickson.
Just when I thought I stood a chance with the man I married, Vickson had to make a bigger sacrifice for Hailey's affection.
As we started running through the stone path now, flashes of Vickson's fight with the formless cloud monster began to flash across my mind. The strange spells he was muttering, the fire in his eyes, and the determination in his voice.
A sinking, heartbreaking realization dawned on me then— Vickson has no desire to be alive for me. He would rather die, get swallowed, and chewed by the formless figure than return anywhere with me. This was a knife to my throat, a punch to my chest.
