YouHeal Hospital
The next morning, Savannah stepped into the hospital with her white coat draped over her arm as she adjusted her ID badge. The smell of antiseptics and coffee filled the air, just like every other day. Nurses, doctors, and patients moved around, keeping up their usual busy pace. It was all so normal, so routine.
Despite the normalcy of the morning, a strange weight lingered in her chest. The events of the previous night still haunted her. The small, folded piece of paper was no longer on her, but it might as well have been, because the burden of what it carried hadn't left her mind.
She tried to push those thoughts away and focus on work. For her, work was like an escape, her sanctuary.
Hours passed in a blur of patient rounds, case discussions, and paperwork until finally, a small window of free time presented itself. She made her way to the hospital cafeteria, grateful for a chance to breathe.
"I swear, I have the worst luck when it comes to dating," Bella groaned dramatically, dropping her tray on the table as she plopped into the seat beside Savannah.
Savannah arched a brow, taking a sip of her coffee. "That bad?"
"Worse," Bella huffed, crossing her arms tightly. "I can't believe I even considered it. He seemed nice at first, but ugh, he's so stuck in the past. He actually wanted me to quit my job and become a full-time housewife. Can you even imagine?"
Savannah winced, trying to hold back a laugh. "Oof, yeah... that's definitely not your style."
"Not at all!" Bella sighed in frustration, shaking her head vigorously. "I mean, I want romance, but I also want my freedom. Is that really too much to ask for?"
Savannah smiled, absentmindedly stirring her coffee. "So, what does he look like?"
Bella pulled out her phone and scrolled through her photos, finally stopping at one and turning the screen toward Savannah. "Here he is."
Savannah leaned in closer, examining the image. The guy in the picture looked pretty decent—well-groomed, with a strong jawline, neatly styled hair, and dressed in a sharp suit. He didn't seem too bad at all.
"He's not that bad," Savannah remarked, tilting her head slightly.
Bella rolled her eyes dramatically. "Of course, you'd say that. You're married to the whole golden flag. Your standards are just way too high."
Savannah let out a chuckle, shaking her head in disbelief.
Suddenly, a thought popped into her mind.
"Can I borrow your phone for a sec?" she asked, glancing over at Bella.
Bella shrugged, a casual smile on her face. "Sure, go ahead." She passed the phone to Savannah without a second thought.
Savannah grabbed the device, quickly exiting the photo app, and swiped down to check the date and time. A small, anxious voice inside her had been nudging her to do this ever since last night.
She wasn't sure why.
She had no clue what she was hoping to find.
But what she saw...
It shattered her.
The date displayed on the screen read: July 17, 2028.
Her breath caught in her throat.
Her body went rigid.
For what felt like an eternity, she just stared at the screen, her mind racing to make sense of the reality before her.
Everything around her faded away. The sounds of doctors and nurses chatting in the cafeteria became muffled, like whispers in a long hallway. Her hands started to shake uncontrollably, and before she realized it, the phone slipped from her fingers, hitting the floor with a dull thud.
No. No, no, no.
This can't be real.
This can't be happening.
Savannah's chest heaved with shallow breaths, panic gripping her lungs like a vice.
Bella's voice floated to her, but it felt distant and warped.
"Savannah? Hey, are you alright?"
But Savannah couldn't hear her.
All she could hear was the overwhelming cacophony of her own racing thoughts.
Because last night... last night, when she clutched that tiny piece of paper, she was hoping for... for something else. She wasn't ready for this.
Her hands fisted in her lap as she struggled to breathe. The weight of the revelation crushed her, suffocating her.
How?
Why?
What did this mean?
A horrifying thought slithered into her mind, one that made her stomach twist painfully-
She felt Bella's hand on her arm, gently shaking her. "Savannah? Savannah, what's going on?"
But the words wouldn't come.
She was lost, unsure of what was real anymore.
And that fear gripped her more than anything else.
Later at Night
The night air was refreshingly crisp as Savannah stepped out of the hospital, her shift finally behind her. The fatigue weighing down her limbs was nothing compared to the tempest still swirling in her mind.
July 17, 2028.
That date had been reverberating in her thoughts all day, twisting her emotions and gnawing at her sanity. She had barely been present during the last few hours of her shift, moving through the motions like a specter in a life that suddenly felt foreign.
Bella had left early for an emergency call, leaving Savannah to make her way out alone. Perhaps it was for the best—maybe she needed this time to herself.
As she took a deep breath, allowing the cool air to wash over her, her gaze landed on the one person who could momentarily quiet the storm inside her.
Blaze.
He stood a few feet away, casually leaning against the hood of his car, his broad frame relaxed, and a huge, boyish grin lighting up his face the moment he caught sight of her.
For just a brief moment, everything felt right again.
Savannah quickened her pace until she was close enough to tumble into his embrace. His arms wrapped around her tightly, pulling her against his chest, where the steady beat of his heart became her safe haven.
Yet, even with the warmth of his embrace and the comfort she usually found in his touch, her expression was hard to decipher.
Blaze noticed.
His hands gently glided up and down her back as he leaned back slightly, looking down at her with a concerned frown. "What's going on, Ana?"
Savannah didn't respond—not because she didn't want to, but because she simply didn't know how. Instead, she closed her eyes, pressing her ear against his chest once more, listening. His heart, strong and steady, thudded against her cheek. The sound was real. The warmth of his body was real.
That had to mean everything else was real too, right?
"Ana?" His voice was softer now, filled with concern.
She glanced up at him, forcing a smile, trying to push everything else out of her mind.
"I'm hungry," she said, her tone light and almost playful. "Can we have a barbecue?"
Blaze blinked, a bit taken aback by her sudden change in mood. But when she wrapped her arms around him tightly, as if she wouldn't let go even if the world fell apart, his expression softened.
He gently cupped the back of her head, running his fingers through her hair in that soothing way he always did when he sensed she needed comfort.
"Of course, honey." he whispered, planting a kiss on her forehead. "Let's go get you something to eat."
Savannah studied his face, really taking him in—the way his eyes sparkled under the streetlights, the effortless smile that lit up his lips, and the warmth of his touch that radiated nothing but love.
A love she knew was genuine.
A love she desperately needed to be real.
So, she chose to believe in nothing else.
