Chapter 163 - Chapter 160 - No Going Back Now.

First Day at the Hospital

After getting ready and slipping into her crisp white coat, Savannah headed to the hospital.

She wasn't alone—four other volunteer doctors had joined her, each ready to tackle different medical emergencies.

When they arrived, Dr. Rebecca Hale, who led the volunteer program, welcomed them warmly.

"Thank you all for being here during this crucial time. Our hospital is experiencing a surge in patients, and your skills will make a real difference. Follow me, I'll give you a little tour."

Savannah followed, soaking in the sights—the expansive hallways, the bustling staff, and the quiet urgency that hung in the air.

Once the orientation wrapped up, they were assigned to their departments. Savannah found herself in the ICU, where patients in critical condition needed immediate attention.

And just like that, her journey began.

Her first day was nothing short of intense. She faced long hours, a steady stream of patients, and cases that demanded every ounce of her skill and concentration.

But it was familiar.

It was real.

For the first time in days, she felt like herself again—Dr. Savannah Miller, a surgeon with purpose.

As the day faded into night, the weight of exhaustion finally caught up with her.

Late Night Call with Blaze

Back at the hotel, Savannah flopped onto the bed, stretching her tired muscles.

She let out a sigh of relief before reaching for her phone, already knowing who she wanted to call.

As soon as the facetime connected, Blaze's face popped up, his expression softening when he saw her.

"You look worn out, sweetheart."

Savannah couldn't help but smile. "It was a long day, but it felt great to be back in the operating room."

Blaze leaned against what looked like their bed at home, running his fingers through his hair. "I hate that I can't be there to take care of you."

Her heart ached a little. "You always take care of me, Blaze. Even from a distance."

His lips curled into a playful smirk. "You know it. Now, tell me, did you eat?"

Savannah groaned. "Blaze..."

"Ana." He raised an eyebrow, waiting for her response.

She let out a soft chuckle and nodded. "Yeah, I ate."

"Great. Now, close your eyes and try to get some sleep."

Savannah sighed as she lay down, snuggling into her pillow. "I can't really sleep without hearing your voice, you know."

Blaze's tone softened. "Then just keep the call on. I'll stay with you until you drift off."

And just like that, Savannah closed her eyes, listening to the calming rhythm of Blaze's breathing, feeling his presence even through the screen.

But as sleep began to take hold, one thought lingered in her mind.

Would he still look at her the same way once she revealed the truth?

Savannah's Fourth Day in California

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting a warm golden glow through the hospital windows, Savannah wrapped up yet another long but rewarding shift. It had been four days since she arrived in California, and so far, everything had gone pretty smoothly. Just two more days until she could head back home.

The hospital buzzed with its usual activity, but Savannah had found her rhythm. Patients came and went, surgeries were performed, and she worked diligently alongside her new colleagues. Still, no matter how busy she kept herself, the weight of what lay ahead lingered in her thoughts.

Today was the day.

During her break hour, Savannah slipped into the restroom. She locked the door behind her and leaned against the cool tiled wall, letting out a sharp breath. Her fingers tightened around a small piece of paper, her knuckles turning pale.

She had been fixated on it for days. The name, the address, the phone number—it was all right there, staring back at her. The key to the truth she had been dodging.

Her heart raced in her chest as she weighed her next steps.

No more running.

With a determined shake of her head, she tore her gaze from the note and sprang into action. She unbuttoned her hospital coat and peeled off her scrubs, swapping them for a pair of black cargo pants and a white crop top. She layered on a zippered hoodie, pulling the hood up to keep a low profile. Finally, she topped it off with a black cap and a face mask, stuffing her hospital clothes into her backpack.

Taking one last glance in the mirror, she barely recognized herself. Gone was Dr. Savannah Miller, the surgeon. In her place stood a woman on a mission, ready to confront a truth she wasn't sure she was prepared to face.

With one last deep breath, she pivoted on her heels and quickly left the restroom.

A Silent Escape

Savannah stepped out of the hospital, taking careful, deliberate strides, ensuring that no one was watching her too closely. More importantly, she had to make sure certain eyes were not on her.

Once outside, she kept her gaze low, blending in with the crowd of hospital staff and visitors. She signaled for a taxi and slipped into the backseat, her heart racing in her chest.

The driver glanced back at her. "Where to, miss?"

Savannah paused for just a moment before she opened the crumpled piece of paper and recited the address written on it.

As the taxi merged into the bustling streets of California, she exhaled slowly, feeling a mix of nerves and relief.

There was no going back now.

The meeting

Savannah stepped out of the taxi, her heart racing as she gazed up at the tall, elegant building looming before her. The golden letters glimmered under the city lights—

"Vincent Van Doughnut"

A five-star restaurant. Luxurious, classy, and completely not what Savannah had envisioned for this meeting. But she reminded herself not to judge a book by its cover.

Taking a deep breath, she adjusted the strap of her backpack on her shoulder and moved forward, her sneakers making soft thuds against the polished floor as she entered the grand venue.

Inside, the atmosphere was enchanting. A gentle melody floated through the air, mingling with the chatter of well-dressed diners savoring their gourmet meals. The chandeliers above cast a warm, golden light, and the air was filled with the delicious scents of fresh bread, roasted meat, and fine wine.

Without a moment's pause, she headed straight for the elevator. She had clear instructions—a specific floor, a designated meeting spot.

As the doors closed around her, she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror-like elevator walls. She could hardly recognize her own reflection. Was this really happening? Was she prepared for what awaited her on the other side?

With a soft ding, the elevator came to a stop, and the doors slowly slid open.
