As everyone knows, the intelligence of characters in horror films can't be too high. Once their intelligence reaches the level of understanding that they shouldn't court death to avoid dying, the plot can't continue.
Their combat abilities shouldn't be too strong either. It's best if they don't have guns, and even if they do, the bullets can't kill the monsters. Otherwise, the screenwriter can't keep the plot going and has to bring in a sanctimonious Holy Mother to save the day.
