The "fine swords" were indeed shards of the Magic Ring.
They offered a negligible increase in strength, which is why the Undead looked down upon them.
Without the correct way to utilize them, the shards couldn't contribute much, and even some Blessed Weapons or Cursed Weapons that had been infused with Magic Ring Shards were mediocre at best.
