Chapter 276 - Chapter 276: Crimson

How fast can a peregrine falcon fly?

Its regular flight speed can reach 140 km/h, and during a dive, it can exceed 300 km/h.

This was the first time Wade fully unleashed the speed of his transformed form.

In the high-altitude skies, fierce winds roared, and torn clouds were quickly left behind. A hawk seemed to target the peregrine falcon but gave up after trailing for only a short while.

On the piece of parchment, the black dot was still moving.

Wade occasionally glanced at it to adjust his direction and ensure he wasn't flying the wrong way.

That black dot on the parchment represented Peter Pettigrew's location.

Back when Peter had been captured, Wade had secretly attached a tracking parchment to him before he was taken away.

Peter was an escape expert, after all. To prevent the original timeline from repeating itself, Wade had made this extra preparation.

The parchment had been enchanted with a Shrinking Charm, making it no larger than a speck of dandruff. Wade wasn't worried about it being discovered.

However, he hadn't been able to use a Permanent Sticking Charm on a living person without being noticed at the time. Thus, if Peter took a bath, the parchment was likely to be washed away.

Fortunately, neither the Wizengamot court that tried him nor Azkaban provided prisoners with the luxury of bathing.

As a result, the tiny piece of parchment had stayed with him until now.

Wade wasn't surprised by Peter Pettigrew's escape.

Although the Ministry of Magic claimed to have sufficient measures to prevent Animagi like Peter from escaping. But the small size of a rat, combined with its chewing and burrowing abilities, made it almost impossible to ensure foolproof containment.

Wade had expected Peter to escape much sooner, so it was surprising that he had remained in prison for nearly a year.

Did Peter only recently find an opportunity to escape?

Or did he spend the past year working on something else?

Unease stirred in Wade's heart. With a flap of his wings, he sped up even more.

Below the falcon stretched the vast, endless ocean.

The tracking parchment's functionality was simple. It couldn't display environmental changes like the Marauder's Map or show routes and distances like Muggle GPS. It only allowed Wade to determine the direction of his target.

After flying for a while, Wade suddenly noticed that Peter Pettigrew's location had shifted from the north to the south. Realizing he had overshot his target, Wade immediately arced through the air, changing direction.

Slowing down, he began to search the area carefully.

A peregrine falcon's vision is eight times better than a human's, capable of spotting prey from over a kilometer away. However, to locate a small gray rat, Wade needed to lower his altitude further.

He made a circuit of the area. There was no sign of a bald man swimming frantically or a small rat in the open sea, but there was a Muggle fishing boat.

If nothing else, Peter Pettigrew was likely on that boat.

This guy was far craftier than Sirius Black. When Sirius had escaped in the original story, he'd relied solely on dog paddling to swim across the North Sea back to land.

Wade flew higher and followed the fishing boat for a while.

The people aboard were resting, moving languidly. Some were in their cabins smoking or reading, others were sleeping. Only one person was out on deck, busy untangling fishing nets.

After a while, someone brought out a large basin and called out to the others. They gathered on the deck to eat.

It was at that moment that a rat scurried out from somewhere. Sneakily, it surveyed its surroundings before darting into the kitchen along the base of the wall. With a leap, it transformed into a short, stout man.

Peter Pettigrew had plenty of experience stealing food.

Back when he lived with the Weasleys, he'd often only get a small handful of grain or leftover crumbs from biscuits. Stealing was the only reason Peter hadn't starved.

This time, he didn't even glance at the sandwiches sitting on the table or the freshly sliced carrots the cook had just prepared.

Peter darted into a corner, grabbed a few raw vegetables and fruits, and stuffed them into his coat. He rummaged through the cupboards, found a sugar jar, and shoved a handful into his mouth. He also swiped some salt, two pieces of chocolate, and a strip of salted meat.

He was careful to steal items that were abundant onboard. After his theft, he rearranged everything to make it look untouched.

But at sea, water was far more critical than food.

Peter managed to steal an entire jug of fresh water and clutch it tightly. Taking advantage of the fact that the crew was busy eating, he began to sneak out.

As he stepped out of the kitchen with one foot, the other still inside, Peter was calculating how long his stolen supplies would last. Suddenly, his sixth sense screamed danger.

His watery, beady eyes widened in alarm. Without hesitation, he tried to retreat, but his body below the neck didn't respond.

Moments later, even his head refused to move. Only his eyes could still dart around.

—A Stunning Spell? Who found me? Or was it those two…?

Peter Pettigrew's thoughts hadn't fully formed when he realized his clothes had begun to levitate. They lifted him up, dragging him determinedly toward the ship's railing.

—No, no, no…!

Peter screamed internally in a frenzy. His survival instinct nearly broke through the magical restrictions and radiated from his terrified eyes. He strained to roll his eyeballs backward, as if desperately trying to see what was happening.

Splash!

The immobilized man's body was as heavy as a stone, and the seawater swallowed him with a loud gulp. A small whirlpool formed where he plunged into the sea, but it quickly dispersed by the waves churned up by the fishing boat's engine.

Standing on the top of the pilot's cabin, Wade didn't relax for a second. He casted a Bubble-Head Charm and dove into the sea.

Splash!

On the deck, one of the fishermen paused mid-meal and tilted his head to listen. He asked the others, "Did you guys hear something? Like someone falling into the water?"

"Probably a dolphin or a swordfish," another replied casually, laughing. "It couldn't possibly be someone falling overboard. There's no one else on this boat."

"Yeah, makes sense," the first man agreed, reassured, and resumed eating.

Beneath the waves, Wade, with his Bubble-Head Charm intact, finally spotted Peter Pettigrew.

The Stunning Spell's effects had worn off, and Peter was frantically paddling upward with both hands and feet. When he saw Wade descending into the water, terror overtook his face with a mix of pleading and malice shining in his eyes.

Wade didn't hesitate. He fired spell after spell in quick succession, the light of the incantations streaking toward Peter like a rainstorm:

"Incarcerous! Petrificus Totalus! Stupefy! Stupefy! Stupefy! Diffindo! Confringo!"

(Incarcerous Spell, Full Body-Bind Curse, Stunning Spell, Stunning Spell, Stunning Spell, Severing Charm, Blasting Curse)

Peter Pettigrew swiftly transformed into a rat, narrowly evading the first three spells. However, the fourth hit its mark, as did the fifth and sixth.

Crimson blood began to spread slowly through the water.

Not far away, a shark noticed the commotion and turned, and then began swimming directly toward them.
