In the morning, when the first ray of sunlight broke through layers of clouds and shone down, Wade opened his eyes.
During the last school year, he had maintained the habit of waking up as soon as the sun rose, forming a stable biological clock. Even now, he still wakes up very early.
Wade laid in bed with his eyes closed for two minutes, then turned over, got up, washed up, and went downstairs.
At this time, the Grey couple were still asleep, but the aroma of buttered toast was already wafting from the kitchen.
As he passed by the staircase, the mirror next to him wobbled slightly and spoke:
"Good morning, Master Grey. Your outfit today is as casual and stylish as always..."
"Thank you, I'm wearing pajamas," Wade replied.
"They are finely tailored silk pajamas that perfectly showcase your noble temperament. Every time I see them, it's a delight for my eyes..."
"Really? But you don't have eyes," Wade pointed out.
"It's just a figure of speech, Master. The sunlight is lovely today, perfect for wearing a light-colored shirt paired with dark casual trousers. It gives off a clean and crisp vibe, ideal for a walk or meeting friends."
The mirror chirped cheerfully, and even as Wade walked past, he could still hear its voice trailing behind him—
"Even for visiting elders, it would be quite appropriate..."
Wade shook his head.
This chatty mirror was a gift he had bought for his mother, Fiona. Fred had told him that sometimes Fiona could spend two hours discussing outfits and makeup with the mirror.
In a way, this had liberated father and son from repeatedly uttering standard phrases like "looks fine" or "very nice." However, Fred seemed a bit wistful about it and would occasionally hover nearby, trying to join in the conversations between the mirror and his wife.
But that realm was far too unfamiliar for him.
So, he began secretly studying fashion magazines.
Wade: "..."
He wanted to tell his father that to truly join their world, he might first need to learn how to differentiate lipstick shades.
Leaving the mirror behind, Wade arrived on the first floor. The living room was already spotless, and several little dolls were busy preparing breakfast in the kitchen.
Before Wade had started attending Hogwarts, housekeepers would regularly come over to clean and cook. All Fiona had to do was prepare breakfast.
Later, as the number of magic books and items in the house grew, to avoid exposing their secrets, Fiona took over most of the household chores herself.
Although Fred helped whenever he could, his work kept him occupied, and the endless small tasks of managing the household still took up much of Fiona's time.
Wade felt a bit guilty about this and had long considered hiring a house-elf for the family. However, he was concerned about their safety.
While most house-elves are deeply loyal to their wizard masters, there are also rebellious ones. Moreover, like many magical creatures, house-elves tend to look down on anyone who cannot use magic.
Take Kreacher from the Black family, or Maggie at Hogwarts, for example. They both willingly obeyed Wade's orders. But if they came to the Grey household, would they show the same obedience to Fred or Fiona?
Wade wasn't sure.
Even if they were willing to serve his parents out of respect for him, any underlying contempt or dissatisfaction they felt would likely be openly displayed.
As for hiring one of the cast-off, wandering house-elves abandoned by their masters… Without knowing their background, placing a magical creature with considerable power in the house could pose a threat to the Grey couple.
At first, Wade thought Dobby might be a good choice. However, he later invented magical dolls, which resolved all the issues.
Now, the three magical dolls handled the vast majority of household chores. Fiona only prepared a lovingly crafted meal or knitted a sweater or gloves for her family when she felt like it to pass the time.
The magical dolls had grown accustomed to the household's routines. Just as Wade sat at the dining table, a steaming cup of coffee was brought to him. In no time, a sumptuous breakfast was laid out on the table.
Coco, a small doll, carried a kettle taller than herself and steadily poured a cup of hot water.
As Wade cut a slice of bread, he asked, "Have you noticed any strange people around recently?"
Coco replied, "The strangest person is Alastor Moody. Last night, he broke a bicycle on the road with a Diffindo spell." (Severing Charm)
Wade, about to eat his bread, froze and put down his fork. "Did anyone from the Ministry of Magic come to handle it?"
"No," Coco said. "He didn't attract any Muggle attention. The bicycle's owner thought it was an accident."
"Hmm."
Wade thought for a moment. The Ministry of Magic was probably quite accustomed to Moody causing such incidents. Unless it risked violating the Statute of Secrecy, they likely wouldn't bother to intervene.
If an unexpected situation did need handling… the person in charge would most likely be Arthur Weasley.
After finishing breakfast, another doll, Lena, had already placed the day's newspaper on the table.
Because she was so small, when she ran over carrying a stack of newspapers, it looked as though the newspapers were moving on their own.
Wade couldn't help but chuckle and asked, "Would you like me to make you a bit bigger? It might make things easier."
Lena shook her head. "No need, we're used to this. Besides, it lets us follow the masters when they go out."
Wade nodded and said no more.
Magical dolls, imbued with thoughts, often feel indistinguishable from real people. They can hold conversations, understand vague commands, and perform intricate, complex tasks.
Apart from reproduction and metabolism, they can do almost everything humans can.
In comparison, Muggle AI technology seems clumsy and mechanical.
After finishing breakfast, Wade noticed it was about time. He greeted Fred, who had just gotten up, and prepared to head out.
"When will you be back?" Fred asked.
"Probably in the evening," Wade replied. "If I stay overnight there, I'll send you a message."
"Alright." Fred nodded steadily. He seemed to want to say something but swallowed his words. In the end, he simply said, "Don't forget to eat."
Wade, of course, agreed, then went upstairs to change his clothes.
Fred stood by the window, lit a cigarette, and suddenly heard the flapping sound of wings.
Looking up, he saw a peregrine falcon flying into the distance.
"How can someone weighing over a hundred pounds transform into a bird that weighs barely a pound?" he asked the doll next to him. "Doesn't matter need to obey the law of conservation?"
Coco seemed to be in a daze for a moment before responding, "That's magic, Master."
"Yes..."
Fred sighed deeply. "This is… magic."
