Elias's message replayed again and again in my mind like a broken warning alarm.
There was no name. No detail. Just that sharp thread of control and certainty… as if he already knew I'd obey.
The worst part?
I was going to.
---
The next evening came too fast.
I tried to act normal around Lila — smiled where I should, nodded, laughed once or twice. But I could tell she noticed something was off. My hands kept fidgeting. My appetite was gone. I'd changed outfits three times before settling on the first one again.
"You sure you're okay?" she finally asked, concern lacing her voice.
I didn't look up. "Yeah. Just… tired."
The words felt like ash in my throat.
And then came the lie.
"I forgot I have a follow-up consult at the other facility," I said, not meeting her eyes. "It's nothing serious. Won't be long."
Lila narrowed her gaze. "Now? You're going out now?"
I nodded, swallowing the knot forming in my chest. "Just an hour, max."
She hesitated, clearly unconvinced. "Want me to come with?"
"No." My voice cracked. "I mean… I'll be quick. Besides, you've had a long day."
Her eyes lingered on mine, uncertain.
"Be safe, okay?"
I nodded and turned too quickly, grabbing my bag and rushing out the door before the guilt had the chance to completely swallow me.
---
The city felt louder than usual.
Maybe because every sound reminded me I was doing something I couldn't explain. Maybe because every footstep brought me closer to him.
The building was tucked away on a quiet street — elegant and private. Exactly the kind of place someone like Elias would live. Cold glass, steel gates, and the unspoken message: you don't belong here unless you're invited.
I was invited.
Or summoned.
---
The moment I reached the entrance, the door buzzed open before I could touch it.
As if he'd been watching.
As if he knew the second I stepped near.
My heart thundered. My steps slowed.
But I walked in anyway.
