When Mina came to take Jordan away because he had an appointment at the hospital, she looked at Celeste with some concern. The usual tinge of hatred that laced her eyes and face seemed to melt when she grabbed hold of Jordan's arm.
"Thank you for coming," Celeste said weakly, letting her gaze fall on the salted ground of the dead garden. Everything poetically frozen through as the landscape between them.
Mina quickly shrugged off her coat, then placed it around Celeste's shoulders, surprising her.
"Is it true?" Mina asked, a hand still on Celeste's shoulder. "Are you pregnant?"
Celeste had wanted to keep it a secret until at least three months in, but now everyone probably already knew about it. Whether the superstition was true or not, she'd just have to find out on her own.
"Yes. It's true," Celeste replied lamely. "I wanted to wait until three months... I shouldn't have blurted it out."
