Unwanted Moments
Zina's POV
The room was too quiet. Too still.
I lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, my thoughts chasing each other in endless circles. Everything felt wrong—like the walls were closing in and I couldn't breathe. The blanket felt too heavy, and even though Asher was curled up beside me, safe and sound, I still felt completely alone.
I rubbed my eyes and groaned. Why couldn't my brain just shut up for once?
A soft knock at the door made me freeze. My heart jumped into my throat, and I sat up so fast that Asher stirred beside me.
"Who is it?" I hissed, trying to keep my voice low so I wouldn't wake him.
"It's me."
Xaden.
Of course.
I should've known he wouldn't leave me alone—not after the way he'd hovered all day, watching me like I was some fragile doll that might shatter if he looked away.
I didn't answer, hoping he'd take the hint and go away. But the door creaked open anyway, and there he was, stepping inside like he owned the place.
