Chapter 22 - Responsibilities

The morning sun was high, spilling warmth over the estate as Ahicia settled in the grand sitting room adjoining her chambers. A steaming cup of tea rested on the low table before her, but her attention was on Lysandra Vale, who stood poised and composed, holding a small leather-bound book.

"Well," Lysandra began, flipping through the pages with practiced ease. "As Queen, your responsibilities are numerous but manageable, provided you approach them with care. Allow me to break it down."

Ahicia leaned back, arms crossed, a flicker of annoyance crossing her crimson eyes. "Let's hear it," she said, her tone edged with defiance.

"First," Lysandra began, "you're responsible for maintaining unity within the pack. That means overseeing disputes, ensuring fair treatment, and serving as a symbol of stability and strength. It's not just about dominance; it's about trust and respect."

Ahicia rolled her eyes. "So I'm a glorified babysitter?"

Lysandra's lips twitched with amusement. "In a way. But one with claws and a crown. Next, you're expected to represent the pack in external matters—alliances, negotiations, and so forth. Damian may lead, but your influence will carry weight, especially among other omegas."

"Great," Ahicia muttered. "Diplomacy. My favorite."

"Third," Lysandra continued, unfazed, "there's the matter of pack welfare. That includes ensuring resources are distributed equitably, the young are educated, and traditions are preserved. You'll be expected to attend ceremonies, preside over significant events, and… oh yes, manage the household servants."

Ahicia's brows rose. "Manage you, you mean?"

Lysandra smiled, inclining her head. "Precisely. But don't worry, I'm very self-sufficient. Now," she closed the book with a decisive snap, "there are a few additional duties unique to queens, but we'll tackle those as they arise."

Silence stretched between them as Ahicia processed the list, her irritation tempered by a growing sense of responsibility.

Lysandra tilted her head, a mischievous glint in her eyes. "While we're on the topic of duties, may I ask you something personal?"

Ahicia's gaze sharpened. "Depends on the question."

Lysandra grinned, leaning in slightly. "Why don't you and the Alpha share a room? Isn't that… customary?"

Ahicia blinked, momentarily caught off guard. Her crimson eyes narrowed. "That's none of your business."

"True," Lysandra agreed with a shrug. "But you've got to admit, it's an interesting choice. The pack is bound to notice, you know. They might even start talking."

"Let them," Ahicia said coldly. "It doesn't concern them, or you."

Lysandra held up her hands, a placating gesture, though the amusement in her expression didn't fade. "Fair enough, Queen Ahicia. Just a servant's idle curiosity."

"Anything else?" Ahicia asked, her tone a clear dismissal.

"Not for now," Lysandra said lightly, stepping back and bowing her head. "You know where to find me if you need anything."

As the door closed behind her, Ahicia let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. The weight of her responsibilities loomed larger now, but so did her determination to meet them—on her own terms.
