Chapter 6 - The Beginning Of Something

I received an email from Alex:

Subject: Re: Meeting to Discuss Proposal

Dear Maddie,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm glad you're considering the proposal. I'd love to discuss it further and address any concerns you may have.

How about we meet at The Coffee Spot on Friday at 2 PM? It's a quiet spot, and we can talk without distractions.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Best,

Alex

Dear Alex,

Thanks for suggesting The Coffee Spot. Friday at 2 PM works perfectly for me.

I've been thinking a lot about your proposal, and I'm excited to discuss it further. Your willingness to address my concerns means a lot.

Looking forward to seeing you then.

Best,

Maddie

Friday arrived, and I stood in front of my closet, deliberating on what to wear. Today's meeting with Alex could be the break I needed. A successful collaboration would secure my financial stability and allow me to focus on Jake.

Choosing a crisp white blouse and tailored black pants, I dressed quickly. A swift glance in the mirror confirmed my professionalism.

"Mom, where are you going?" Jake asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

"I have a meeting with someone about a potential work project, sweetie," I replied.

"Is it a new job?" Jake's curiosity piqued.

"Maybe, baby. But I'll know more after the meeting."

Jake's eyes narrowed. "Will you have to work more hours?"

I reassured him, "I'll make sure it doesn't affect our time together, okay?"

Jake nodded, seeming satisfied, but I knew he was worried.

The Coffee Spot buzzed with activity as I arrived. I secured a quiet table by the window.

Alex walked in, commanding attention. His tailored charcoal suit, crisp white shirt, and silver tie exuded authority. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and his sharp jawline seemed chiseled.

"Maddie," he said, his deep voice professional.

"Alex," I replied, standing to greet him.

His handshake was firm, and his eyes, though polite, revealed nothing.

"Thanks for meeting me, Maddie," Alex said, taking a seat.

"Of course, Alex. I'm intrigued by your proposal."

As he outlined the project's vision, I found myself engaged. His passion for social justice resonated deeply.

"So, tell me more about the project," I encouraged.

Alex's eyes sparkled, but his tone remained professional. "We're creating a platform to give a voice to those who've been silenced."

I nodded thoughtfully. "How do you see this project making a tangible impact?"

Alex leaned forward, his expression intent. "We'll amplify their stories, provide resources, and mobilize people to take action."

Just then, my phone buzzed with a text from Jake's caregiver: "Jake's asking for you. Can you call him?"

I stepped outside, reassured Jake, and returned to the table.

Alex's expression remained professional. "Everything okay?"

"Yeah, just my son, Jake. He's been worrying about me lately."

Alex's eyes widened slightly. "You have a son?"

I smiled. "Yes, he's my world."

Alex nodded curtly. "Let's discuss the timeline and milestones."

We delved into the project's details, our conversation efficient.

As we concluded, Alex stood. "I expect the proposal by tomorrow afternoon."

"You'll have it," I replied.

We exchanged no small talk as he walked me to the door.

Outside, we parted ways without fanfare. "Goodbye, Maddie."

"Goodbye, Alex."

I watched him disappear into the crowd, sensing a hint of warmth beneath his professional reserve.

Now that the meeting has concluded, the real work begins.
