Chapter 33 - Expedition

- Sun

I woke up bright and early today, it was the first time I could say I was actually happy to get out of bed. My body was filled with excitement and energy today, the wait was killing me and, I hadn't even left the house yet.

On my way out I expected a note or something, from my shadow friend. Especially on a day as special as this one, but there was none. I actually hadn't heard anything from them in the past few days so I guess it was to be expected.

On my way to work, I had to keep my mind from wondering, and keep myself from accidentally speeding there.

Once I got there, Sam rushed over to open the door for me:

"Hey Mike, big day, you excited!?!?"

"Of course, you know I am. Been waiting for this for a long time, can't wait to see what we find."

"Hate that I won't be able to go with you, but I'll be cheering you on from here. So what do you think you'll find out there?"

"Really, anything would be good. Another sword, or shield, maybe a spear, or scepter of some sort. But what I'm really hoping to find is this."

Sam watched as I took my bag off and reached into it, grabbing my notebook, I pulled it out and began flipping through the pages.

"Ah, here it is."

Handing it over, I pointed towards an image I'd drawn. The image was that of a book, with a small description under it.

[Book Of Eden]

[This book quite possibly holds a lost history this world hides, this world has many mysteries and many stories. Fairytales could possibly be apart of that history, but are covered up as bedtime stories.

My research shows the existence of other worldly beings and this book may hold the evidence I need. I'm not sure why such things would be hidden or covered up, but finding this is my best chance at figuring it out.]

"Wait, so you wrote that description?"

"Yeah, at first I planned on writing about the things I've learned and how they correlate with the book. But everytime I've tried, I'd end up losing myself in thought, so I just kept this."

"Well gotta say, sounds pretty crazy. I mean not in a disrespectful way, it's just a lot. This one book could uncover so much, and there's a chance it could be found soon. Plus I mean the fairytale thing, that would be insane."

I just nodded as I smiled to myself, the seed was planted in Sam's mind and I could already see the ideas brewing.

I watched a bright smile appear on his face a he put his hands on my shoulder stopping in the middle of the hallway:

"Wait so dragons and sea monsters, are those real?"

"Uhhh... I'm not sure... could be."

"That would be so cool, I mean scary sure, but imagine riding one of those things. Or just watching them go at it, that would be awesome."

I watched as his smile grew while his mind wondered, I had never thought of those creatures when thinking of fairytales and folklore. Things like that would be absolutely terrifying, but with them also comes the "gods" and otherworldly beings, including angels. So in a sense we wouldn't have to worry about them.... I hope.

We continued talking as we walked towards the lab, once we got there we said our goodbyes.

"Oh, and I was a litte sad to not see you coming, I'll be back soon. But I can admit I'm gonna miss our talks."

His smile grew warm from my words:

"Come back safe, and don't stay away too long. The place will be boring without you but I'll manage."

We nodded to one another then went our separate ways.

Walking in I expected to be ambushed by Sofia but looking around I couldn't see her anywhere, honestly it put a small smile on my face. I felt I had gotten my peace back, heading to my desk I sat down and began jotting some notes down while I waited.

A few minutes later Maria walked in, she was talking to someone on the phone. When she spotted me, she snapped her fingers to get my attention then waved me over.

"Alright, so I just got off the phone with Sofia. She's got a few things to take care of then she'll meet us at the airport, I'll ride with you there, send you off then come back here. Any questions?"

"Nope."

"Good, get your stuff we're leaving right now."

"Wait, like right now, right now?"

"Yes. I thought you said you didn't have any questions."

I rushed over to grab my things, I started shoving things into my bag as I hurriedly walked back.

"I don't, I just didn't expect to be leaving right away."

"For you it's right away, but I've been here for a while, so I got the chance to work on some things. Should've came earlier, I guess."

She walked away with a smirk on her face, as I followed I noticed some of the others walking out of their labs to see us off.

Heading to the elevator, I help expected to see Sam again, but I knew he was probably busy. Getting off we reached the parking garage, we got in her car since I would be away, it would be dumb to bring mine.

We drove in silence, I'm guessing she knew Sofia would probably drive me crazy on the way there, so she was giving me a little time to breathe.

Once we got to the airport I expected us to park and walk in through the lobby, but Maria kept driving towards the back. Once we got there, we were stopped by security, she showed them her badge, and I followed suit.

After checking them, we were let in. Driving around the corner we could see a few people coming out of their cars, as well as a few black cars and trucks.

From them a few men and women walked out wearing black suits, they seemed to be some kind of security detail. Two of them opened the doors and out two young women walked out.

One I recognized, it was Sofia. The other I wasn't sure of, after getting out the talked for a bit then hugged one another before Sofia noticed us.

"Who's that?"

"That is Ashley Bryne, or our little knucklehead's older sister."

"Damn you mean there's more than one, well they don't look alike so maybe not."

"Yeah Soph's adopted, so you don't have to worry. Anyway she's the head of the company Sofia came from, so essentially you're looking at our closest partner and biggest supporter."

"Really?"

I watched as she was escorted back to her car, after getting in she stayed, waiting for us to depart.

"About time you guys showed, I feel like I've been waiting forever."

"We watched you pull in before us."

Sofia just smiled at the comment, we knew what she meant. I feel the same way, this was what I'd been waiting my whole life for, so if anyone could relate it was me.

"Alright you too, I've gotta head out. Be safe out there ok, Sun, this is your first time so stick close to her, ok. Seriously be careful, don't do anything I wouldn't do."

"I'd rather not do the things you would do."

The joke made Sofia and I laugh, but when we looked back to Maria there was no smile on her face. I swallowed hard as I fixed my face and tried to avoid eye contact.

"I'm not kidding, if I find out something happened to you two, I'll kill you both myself."

"Right sorry, I understand."

Sofia was about to apologize as well till she realized something:

"Hey you do know, we're about the same age right. Why am I lumped in with him?"

"Because Bryne, you act just as childish as he does. We all have our moments but right now shouldn't be one of them, so put your grown up pants on and get to it."

"Yes ma'am."

We both spoke in unison, she then pulled us in for a hug and watched as we walked towards the plane.

"So your older sister, she seems nice."

"She is, she cares a lot, but sometimes her ways of showing are a bit difficult for me to understand."

Looking over at her I could see she was deep in thought, I didn't say anything for a while. I looked over at the car where her sister was and could see the window rolled down, and her watching us.

I gave an awkward wave which was surprisingly returned with a smile, it kinda creeped me out.

Turning back, I waited a few seconds before saying anything:

"It's fine, loves a hard thing to completely understand. I'm sure however it is she shows it, in her mind, it's in your best interest."

She said nothing as we walked up to the steps, but I could see a small smile as we entered.
