John Wilson took one look at James Brown's age, clearly an adult but not too old, and couldn't figure out exactly who James was to Sarah. So he took the initiative to introduce himself, even name-dropping his father, as though everyone should know who his dad is.
James Brown didn't mind if boys pursued Sarah, but John Wilson's average looks, coupled with his tendency to flaunt his father's status, immediately lowered his impression of him. Even if John had decent grades, such behavior wouldn't lead to much achievement. On top of that, it was clear Sarah didn't have feelings for him.
