Dave's eyes scanned the latest system message.

The screen blinked back at him, followed by a notification of a new ability gained. He frowned, confusion knitting his brow. "But I didn't—"
He stood abruptly, the chair scraping loudly against the floor, and made his way down the stairs. The usual cacophony of growls and snarls was absent. Instead, an eerie silence hung in the air. As he approached the hallway leading to the back door, he saw the boulderback beasts, their massive forms lumbering away into the distance, retreating like a tide pulling back from the shore.
But it was the sight before him that made his mouth widen out in surprise. The ground was littered with the bodies of the fallen beasts, their once-menacing eyes now dull and lifeless.
