Fuck.
Double fuck.
That was ill-timed. Horribly timed. Catastrophically bad timing with a generous scoop of everything wrong layered on top.
I watched Olivia walk away from me and I did not have the right words fast enough to stop her.
She did not even look back.
Her shoulders were stiff, posture tight, and I knew I had just undone every fragile bit of progress we had made since her father was arrested. I hadn't meant for it to come out like that. I was trying to help. Trying to offer a way to protect her father's legacy and shield her from what was about to turn into a very public slaughter.
But it sounded like a power grab which was exactly what it was.
I ran a hand through my hair, breathing in through my nose. I had to fix this. I had to salvage something…anything because if she started doubting me now, everything I was doing… everything I was risking… would crumble.
My brother's life depended on this.
