She was no saint; she hesitated too. The first thing she thought of was her father. It had not been easy to return home, but it was necessary because her father's health required his children by his side. Then, her thoughts turned to him, far across the ocean. His return date was approaching day by day, he was to marry her after all their difficulties, yet they were to be separated again.
Yet, others had parents and children, loves and concerns of their own. These could not be used as excuses.
So, after lingering in doubt, under the bright eyes of the department head, she nodded, indicating she understood.
That day, when she video-called him, she was preoccupied with heavy thoughts, which he detected at a glance.
"What's wrong?"
She reached out, caressing his eyebrows and eyes on the screen.
Seeing this, he kissed her palm through the screen, "Quick, tell me, what's happened?"
