Chapter 4 - III:THE EDGE OF THE MAP

The Going Merry rocked gently as it cut through the tide, the sails swollen with wind. The sky had shifted from clear to bruised orange, streaked with long shadows. Loguetown lay ahead—its spires jagged against the twilight, like the ribs of a sleeping giant.

Nami stood at the helm, both hands gripping the wheel—not for stability, but for something to hold herself together. Every movement around her felt sharper, as though the world had turned up the volume. The creak of the ropes, the call of a distant gull, even the faint heartbeat in her chest—all crisp, alive.

But beneath the stillness, her mind was unraveling.

The power inside her hadn't settled. It simmered.

A hum beneath the skin. A whisper behind her thoughts.

She blinked, gritting her teeth. "Stop doing that."

[Noted. Minimizing intrusive notifications.]

"Good," she muttered, then immediately flinched.

It was learning.

"Hey—Nami?" Usopp's voice broke the silence. He was lounging near the mast, a fresh band of cloth tied around his forehead, slingshot in hand. "You've been at the wheel forever. You okay?"

"I'm fine," she replied quickly, too quickly. Her voice came out smooth, a little too breezy. "Just keeping us on course."

He nodded, unsure, and wandered off.

She exhaled sharply and flexed her fingers. The System's presence hadn't faded—not really. It had simply… receded. Like a hunter waiting in the tall grass.

Her hands pulsed with a faint light for half a second—then it was gone again.

Was this what it meant to evolve?

To be rewritten?

The world ahead stretched wide and full of promise—but also danger. Loguetown wasn't just another port. It was the place where the Pirate King had drawn his last breath. A place soaked in legacy. In fate.

And Nami wasn't sure anymore if she was running toward it or away from something worse.

"Hey, Nami!"

Luffy's voice rang out behind her—bright, weightless, free. He jogged up beside her, barefoot and smiling like always.

"You're being all quiet again. Not like you!"

She didn't answer right away. Her eyes stayed fixed on the horizon where the city slowly bled into focus. Dock cranes like skeletal fingers. Lanterns already lighting up the maze of streets.

"I've just got a lot on my mind," she said at last, her voice thinner than intended.

"Too much thinking's bad," Luffy declared, stretching his arms behind his head. "That's why I don't do it!"

He beamed like that solved everything.

And for him—it probably did.

Nami's hands tensed around the wheel. "I don't have your luxury, Captain."

Luffy tilted his head. "You sure you're okay?"

She wanted to say yes.

Wanted to laugh and say don't worry about me.

But the words stuck.

"…I'm figuring it out."

Luffy watched her for a long moment. Then, with a grin, he slapped her lightly on the back.

"Well, don't take too long. We're gonna find the One Piece. No time to be gloomy!"

And just like that, he wandered off.

Nami stared after him.

There was a purity to Luffy. Untouched by fear. Untouched by… systems.

A pang of envy shot through her like ice.

By the time the sun kissed the edge of the sea, Loguetown loomed large before them—towering spires, clustered rooftops, market chatter echoing faintly even across the water. The city glittered under the dusk, alive with motion.

Sanji appeared beside her, cigarette dangling loosely from his lips.

"You've been staring holes in the skyline, Nami-san," he said, casual but observant. "We'll be docking soon. You alright?"

"I'm fine."

It came out sharper than she meant. She didn't correct it.

Sanji gave a low whistle and raised his hands in surrender. "Didn't mean to pry. Just looking out for you."

She offered him a weary smile. "Thanks. I've got this."

He nodded once and stepped away, but his gaze lingered a second longer than usual.

They're starting to notice.

The idea unsettled her more than it should.

The Going Merry groaned softly as it slipped into dock. Ropes flung to port workers. The air changed—briny with the scent of fish, sweat, iron, and something faintly electric.

The crew gathered at the rail.

The sound of Loguetown hit them like a wave: the shout of hawkers, clink of crates, children laughing, boots on cobblestones, and somewhere in the mix—music.

"WE'RE HERE!" Luffy yelled, already vaulting over the railing before the ship had even settled. "LOGUETOWN, BABY!"

Usopp followed with a whoop. "Seafood and adventure—here we come!"

Zoro cracked his neck. "As long as no one gets in my way, I'm hitting the sword shops."

Sanji's eyes sparkled at the passing women. "Ah, the lovely ladies of Loguetown… my heart is unprepared."

But Nami didn't move.

She stood frozen at the edge of the deck, her fingers resting lightly on the railing. The world buzzed around her—but inside, there was only silence.

[Proximity Alert: System Node - Active.]

[Trial Event pending activation.]

[Step forward to begin.]

She swallowed.

"...I'm not ready."

[Few ever are.]

The voice was quieter now. Not cold. Just final.

[You are not a passenger in this world, Nami.]

[You are the cartographer.]

[And this map leads into the unknown.]

Her breath hitched.

The others were already vanishing into the crowd. Luffy's laughter echoed through the alley. Usopp shouting about shellfish. Zoro grumbling. Sanji flirting.

Their world was still normal.

Hers wasn't.

Not anymore.

She was changing. Becoming something else. And no one knew—not yet.

Would they still trust her if they found out?

Would she?

The System didn't wait for an answer.

[Trial begins upon first step.]

[Node: "Echoes of the King."]

[Danger Level: Moderate.][Reward: Upgrade Access – Class Skill Tier I.]

Class skill.

The words landed like thunder in her skull.

This was real. All of it.

And if she stepped off this ship—nothing would be the same again.

She inhaled deeply. The scent of ocean and smoke and destiny all rolled into one.

Then, without another word, Nami stepped off the Going Merry.

The System whispered, not without reverence:

[Trial Initiated.]

[Welcome to Loguetown.]
