Daniel glanced at Regina again.
She was curled into the couch beside him, in an oversized hoodie that was his and was slipping off one shoulder, bare legs folded under her like a human puzzle. Her hair was in a low bun, strands falling loose, no makeup. Just her and a bowl of popcorn she'd been picking at absentmindedly since they settled into the living room.
He'd gotten her to eat a bit. She took three bites of grilled cheese like she was humoring him, then asked if they could watch a dumb movie. Something with no soul and bad writing. He'd said absolutely not. She grinned, said perfect, and put on a trashy romantic thriller with actors who had more plastic surgery than talent.
Now, the movie droned on in the background, some nonsense about twins switching places and Regina looked better. Tired, yes. But soft again and very beautiful .
Daniel pulled out his phone.
He stepped into the hallway and scrolled until he saw the name.
