Chapter 1 - A Close Call

Incendio: The spell to start a fire

Harry's P.O.V

I followed my fellow Gryffindors into the dimly lit classroom. Ron and Hermione were next to me physically, but mentally, they were in their own world. Hermione would giggle with every word that came out of Ron's mouth. It was as if she had lost all of her intelligence when Ron was around.

God, I wish I'm not that idiotic when I fall in love. I thought.

By the time I made it through the crowd of students most of the good desks were taken and the ones next to Hermione and Ron were already filled. I cursed under my breath and took a seat in the middle, first row. None of the desks in the front were occupied and never have been since this wasn't the class you would want to be picked on, this was the potions potions class, Snape's class.

I didn't exactly hate the man, it was more of an annoyed feeling when he would ask me especially hard questions and would go out of his way to make my life harder than it already is. What was even worse, was that this class was shared with Slytherins meaning I had to deal with a weasel and a bat.

The class was unusually noisy since the infamous Snape hadn't arrived yet. Kids were spreading rumors, fighting each other, laughing, playing, and the few kids in the back; studying. Now that Hermione and Ron were a pair I was mostly alone in the mornings which had slowly turned me into those kids in the back. I would open a book the moment I sat down to read or finish homework. All the commotion abruptly stopped with a strong gust of wind slapping me in the face. I rolled my eyes as the covers on the windows snapped shut and darkness consumed the classroom.

Does he need to show off every day? I thought to myself

As the potion teacher walked in through the door with his cloak dragging on the floor, he sent me a cold stare of hate. Finally taking his attention off of me he looked around the class noticing Hermione and Ron acting all lovey dovey as if this was the last time they would see each other.

"Ron!" Snape shouted

That seemed to snap him out of his trance as he worriedly raised his head and looked at the professor.

"Can you explain to me how to create an invisibility potion?"

This time Ron looked over at Hermione who was happily raising her hand as high as she possibly could, but not paying attention to the cornered Ron.

"Um... m-maybe some ivy roots?" A dark shade of red filled his cheeks.

"Idiot! 10 points from Gryffindor!" Groans and sighs were heard all throughout the Gryffindor's side of the room and chuckles and idiotic laughs were heard from Slytherins side. "Another 20 for your attitudes!" This time everyone stayed quiet... except the Slytherins until Snape snapped his head towards them and gave them a dangerous stare.

"Take out your text books and open to page 690. Now!" His orders broke the silence and are automatically followed, in fear, by the students.

Satisfied, he finally walked away which allowed Neville to quickly sit in the seat next to me. I wasn't surprised that he sat next to me since no one ever wanted to work with him being the only student to somehow ruin every spell or potion. I didn't mind though, yes my grade was going to go down by the end of the day and I was most likely going to be screamed at by the dungeon bat, but I didn't mind since I felt that I was helping someone who really needed it.

I did most of the work last time in potion class meaning this time he was going to work on the potion and I was going to simplify it as much as possible for him to understand. I cast a quick Incendio under the cauldron to get it to boiling point to begin the potion. I looked over the ingredients twice, making sure that I grabbed everything in one trip. The less time I spend near the greasy dungeon bat, the better.

Spider eye, Leaping Toadstool cap, knotgrass sprig, troll bogey, Acromantula venom, pearl dust, Tincture ofDemiguise. I repeated the word over and over in my head until I got to the table where everything was lined up and organised into sections.

spidereye. I grabbed a small container with the gross spider eyes and pushed it into my pocket as I looked around for the next ingredients. When I had gotten everything my arms were filled and my very small pockets were left budging with vials and more weird ingredients.

I walked as slow as I possibly could, balancing everything to the best of my abilities and sending Neville a few worried looks.

I was finally close enough to my desk that the feeling of worry brushed off. That was until I felt a jar of knotgrass sprig slowly sliding down the crook of my arm and the side of my ribs.

"Neville... help!"

It was too late. I couldn't feel the jar between my arm and body, but the sound of breaking glass never reached my ears. One thing I could hear was the sound of heavy breathing. Right. Next. To. Me.

I slowly turned around, my heart beating out of my chest with one question in my head. who's behind me?

oh

I couldn't think, couldn't speak, couldn't move.

There he was, the greasy, old, dungeon bat that every student in the school feared and hated, right behind me he stood, one hand on my shoulder and the other gripping the jar that was way too close to the ground. I could feel my face heat up. Too close!

Thank God Neville had started to make his way over. Snape finally realized how close we were so he backed up and cleared his throat awkwardly. He hesitantly held out the jar and I grabbed it with three fingers from my most free hand. I couldn't see how he looked since I was trying my absolute best not to make eye contact, but I could feel his death stare burning a hole through me.

Neville reached me and started by grabbing anything that seemed close to falling, including the jar of knotgrass sprig that was already beginning to slip for the second time. I hurriedly run back to my seat surprised that Snape hadn't called me out, but also thankful that I wasn't the cause for more points to be taken.

"That was a close call." I whispered under my breath.
