The Veil closed up, leaving Ronin in darkness.
His friends were gone. The fragment was also gone. They had all fallen below.
But Ronin wasn't allowed in. His feet had merely stayed stable above the doorway no matter how much he stamped and tried to break through.
Now, his breathing was heavy, filling the dense air around him.
He could hear movement all around him. And something resembling a groan coming from far above.
Could this be…the Royals?
If it was, Ronin's life would be over in a matter of minutes. Maybe that was okay. Maybe that was how this was supposed to end.
He had been the one to take the risk of coming to the spire. He had been the one to convince his friends that he deserved that fragment.
And now, he was paying the consequences. This would be the end of the line for him.
He closed his eyes, embracing the darkness. The footsteps were growing closer now.
Something touched his shoulder, and Ronin nearly jumped out of his skin.
"Hey," a voice whispered.
