"You were gone a long time today," Nolan murmurs later that night. I lift my gaze from my bowl of meat and diced vegetable soup.
"You sent me to collect firewood during torrential rain. How long did you think it would take? Five minutes?"
Meeting Lucian, seeing him, touching him has remotivated me to keep fighting when I was getting so tired before. Now I know he's alive, Nolan is just a little more bearable. Not much, but some.
This will all end soon, and then Lucian and I can go home to Winter Lake and forget all about him.
"You did a terrible job. Maybe I should reconsider sending you out there. Your grandparents, despite their old age, did a much better job of it. Even in the rain."
It's a battle to hide my panic at Nolan's words, but I manage it. Smiling, I lower my spoon to the table. Then, after pushing my chair back, I rise.
Nolan narrows his eyes. "Where are you going?"
