Chapter 33 - Whispers of War

Chapter: Shadows of the Black Lotus

The Extinguished Flames

In the northern reaches of the Obsidian Shadow Empire lay the stronghold of the Black Lotus Sect. Within its hallowed halls, an ornate chamber housed numerous lamps, each representing a disciple venturing into the outside world. These lamps, ancient instruments of mystic tracking, flickered in correspondence with the life force of their bearers.

As the hours passed, one by one, ten flames were snuffed out. The atmosphere grew tense, whispers spreading like wildfire. When the eleventh extinguished—the lamp of Tian Zhen, the patriarch's own son—a palpable fury ignited within the sect's leader.

Patriarch's Chambers

The patriarch, a middle-aged man of imposing stature, stood before the darkened lamp, his expression a tempest of rage and disbelief.

"How could this transpire?" he muttered, pacing the room. "Tian Zhen was merely tasked with observing the Phoenix Cry's younger generation—those lacking any expert beyond the Flesh and Bone Fortification stage. I even dispatched an elder at the peak of Qi Refinement to ensure their safety. This... this is inconceivable."

He clenched his fists, the room's temperature seeming to drop with his mounting anger.

"Remaining here will yield no answers. I must..."

Before he could finish, a resonant chime echoed through the chamber, signaling an urgent message broadcasted to all higher echelons of the Obsidian Shadow Empire.

"Treasures have begun to surface across the lands," the messenger announced. "The Great Collapse has commenced. The Obsidian Shadow Empire shall embark upon its campaign, with Phoenix Cry as its inaugural target. A new portal has manifested on its borders."

The patriarch's eyes narrowed, processing the confluence of personal loss and imperial ambition.

"So, the tides of fate converge," he mused. "Very well. We shall see how Phoenix Cry withstands the coming storm."

Council of Phoenix Cry

In the heart of the Phoenix Cry Empire, Emperor Hou Feng convened with his council within the grand throne room. The atmosphere was thick with concern as they deliberated over the recent emergence of a portal on their southern frontier.

"Esteemed councilors," the emperor began, his voice steady yet grave, "the appearance of this portal is unprecedented. We must ascertain its origin and intent."

"Your Majesty," Councilor Liu responded, "our scouts report unusual energy emanations. It could be a conduit for external forces."

General Wei interjected, "If hostile entities emerge, our southern defenses may be compromised. We should bolster our garrisons immediately."

"Agreed," Hou Feng nodded. "However, we must also consider the possibility of allies or resources beyond this portal. Dispatch envoys to investigate, but maintain a vigilant defense."

The council nodded in unison, the weight of their decisions pressing heavily upon them.

The realms stood on the precipice of upheaval, destinies intertwined as shadows loomed over the horizon.

Arrival at New Town

After two weeks of arduous travel westward, the group finally arrived at New Town. Recognizing the toll the journey had taken, especially on the female members, they decided to rest for a few days. The young women, despite their cultivation abilities, still faced natural cycles that required respite. Understanding this, the young men chose to explore the town, seeking information and allowing their companions some privacy.

At the Local Tavern

The tavern buzzed with activity, patrons exchanging tales and news over mugs of ale. The group of young men settled at a corner table, ears attuned to the surrounding conversations.

"Have you heard?" one patron exclaimed, leaning closer to his companion. "A mysterious portal has appeared near the Phoenix Cry Empire's southern border."

"Aye," the other replied, his voice hushed. "And with it, rumors of the Obsidian Shadow Empire mobilizing for war. Dark times ahead, my friend."

Shin Keilan leaned in, his curiosity piqued. "Excuse me, sirs. Did you mention a portal near Phoenix Cry?"

The first patron eyed him warily before nodding. "Indeed. They say it's a gateway to unknown realms, teeming with treasures and dangers alike."

Raikai furrowed his brow. "And the Obsidian Shadow Empire? They're planning an invasion?"

The second patron sighed deeply. "That's the word. With the portal's emergence, tensions have escalated. Armies are on the move, and alliances are being tested."

Shinryu exchanged a concerned glance with his comrades. "We appreciate the information. Safe travels to you both."

"Likewise," the first patron replied. "Stay vigilant; these lands are no longer as they once were."

Back at the Inn

The young men returned to the inn, their minds heavy with the news. The young women, sensing their unease, gathered around.

"What troubles you?" Xue Mor asked, concern etching her features. "Did something happen in town?"

Shin Keilan took a deep breath. "We've learned of a portal that has appeared near the Phoenix Cry Empire's southern border. It's causing quite a stir."

"A portal?" Xue Lan echoed, her eyes widening. "To where?"

"That's uncertain," Raikai admitted. "But its presence has provoked the Obsidian Shadow Empire to prepare for war. They're likely aiming to seize whatever lies beyond."

"Then our journey just became more perilous," Yan Feiyan murmured, her gaze distant. "What should we do?"

"For now," Shinryu advised, "we rest and gather more information. We must be prepared for whatever challenges lie ahead."

The group nodded in agreement, the weight of impending conflict settling over them as they contemplated their next steps.
