The girl sitting on the other side of the classroom smiled back at me as soon as we locked eyes, then began typing something on the screen.
I turned around to check and came face to face with the teacher. He did not look pleased. I could see the incredibly dumbfounded look on my face reflected in his eyes.
"S-sir?" I awkwardly called him in order to break the moment of unbearable silence we shared.
"Can you repeat what your classmate just explained to you?" He asked me in a spiteful tone.
"Nooo?" I answered slowly.
"And why is that?" He asked immediately after.
His face was unsettling; I could see the veins in his neck bulging out. Up close, I realized he was a lot more fit than I originally thought him to be.
Do I have to say it out loud? Is this some form of punishment? It's because I couldn't care less about history! What's there to say? Moreover, since times move faster in the fracture, the history there is far longer than on the surface and will keep on getting longer and longer. I don't want to study that!
Instead of saying all of that, I took a deep breath in.
"I'm sorry, I'll pay more attention in the future." I said.
I didn't mean any of those words; I just wanted to get him off my ass.
After apologizing, the teacher exhaled for a long time, expelling all the air in his body, and after a chilling minute in complete silence, he returned to his seat. The professor's eyes didn't look convinced by words; he kept looking at me with disdain.
What the hell was that for? What a fucking weirdo.
The class resumed, and the poor guy was forced to stand for, like, an hour, repeating everything he studied in the books.
What a fucking loser.
I thought of both the professor and his parrot happily regurgitating whatever was taught to him.
The only thing I could vaguely remember was what I saw with my own eyes: that the fracture is a split world from the rest of the world. It was technologically advanced, and the people living there lived with a relatively high standard of living.
I knew some other basic things, like the fact that they appeared suddenly, disrupting the world, making all known countries fall to ruin, and unleashing endless hordes of demons that ravage the surface, or the fact that after the rapture appeared, colors slowly faded away from the world.
Ruling the demonic lands was a human emperor. He freed the people living there and claimed the territories of the Fracture as part of his empire.
That's what I saw from other famous cartoons and movies.
I could remember firsthand just how big their enforcers were; they all were brandishing weapons that seemed out of this world, on a completely different level from those used by the rest of the people.
Because of this, the relationship that the empire has with other countries is always strained as they make constant unreasonable demands and try to invade them; at least, that was all I could gather before almost falling asleep.
"Is it that boring?" The girl behind me messaged me just as I was about to finally shut my eyes.
"Yeah, it's a torture having to suffer through this." I answered her.
"Keep it up, we've still got a long way to go; afterwards we've got math, some geography, science, phys-ed, and some geometry." She added.
Holy hell, how many subjects are there? How long until we can go home?
"In short, there are about 11 hours left until we can escape this hellhole." As if she could read my mind, she answered my question as soon as it popped into my head.
"11? That's too long. By the time this is over, I'm going to be dead!" I replied I wanted to attach an emote to the message but didn't find anything I liked in the selection of choices.
Then, in the middle of the lesson, Ron and Lyjah returned, accompanied by a nurse. She healed my nose with a regenerating ampule. The ampule also fixed my foot; judging by the sounds, I also had a broken foot.
Huh, that's… I didn't notice it; this lack of pain seems a lot more inconvenient than I originally thought it to be.
Even the nurse gave me a strange look; she was bewildered by the fact I walked on my own with a broken foot.
"Oh, yeah, I don't feel much pain, haha…" I tried to explain it, but that didn't seem to change her expression. She parted ways shortly after having a small chat with the teacher.
The teacher followed her, and we remained alone for a bit.
"Hey, do you have plans for this evening?" The girl asked me in the private chat.
"Yeah," I answered.
"A shame, my family right now is hosting a big event; apparently some guys from the surface tried to infiltrate our heaven, so we're hosting a big tournament to see what his fighting skills are like." She replied.
So I raised my head and glanced over at my maid; she responded by shaking her head, so I exulted and refused the offer for that girl.
"Sorry, but I really can't today; maybe next time I won't miss out on the fun."
Why am I even… Haa, I really should've accepted her invitation. I can always study later. How many chances will I get to meet so many people? I wonder if my cousins will go there.
It was then that I remembered they warned me against the people living here, so the likelihood of them attending this event was very slim.
If I ignore my mother's orders and head there, what are the chances she finds out? Mhhh, no, I saw that cloaked figure from earlier. If there are more of them, they will surely tell her as soon as I head there.
"Can I—" I tried to whisper to my maid.
"Absolutely no!" She responded, cutting through my sentence with unmoving resolve.
"Ugh! You could've at least asked the others. No need to be so—"
"It's useless to give the young master hope; the answer would've been the same even if I contacted the madam." She reiterated with a poker face that didn't let out a single emotion.
I sighed and resigned myself to my fate. I waited eagerly for the bell to finally ring, and when the teacher finally left the class, I got up, expecting some sort of break time.
"What are you doing?" Ron asked me.
"What? Don't we have a break time around these parts?" I asked him.
"No, we don't, especially when we're this much behind the program. Sit back down before the next teacher comes, otherwise—" He couldn't finish his sentence before the next teacher made his way into the room.
She had a strange cloak covered in white feathers, she had white, candid skin and an incredibly slender body, to the point it looked sickly. Her arms were so thin I thought that teacher was starving to death.
Unlike the previous teacher, she was carrying a pile of books in her arms.
I quietly sat down and waited for her to distribute the book, and as I skimmed through their content, I saw they were filled with nothing but questionnaires, either with multiple-choice answers or open answers.
What the…
"Oh, we have a new face. Hi!" Her low and soft voice was in complete contrast compared to the previous teacher.
Why was Ron freaking out about her earlier? She's so sweet!
"I doubt Professor Laycen introduced you to your new classmates, so how about we take some time off to get to know each other?" Her feeble and weak voice was barely audible, making me feel pity for her.
As I looked directly at her face, I saw that she had large bags under her eyes; she looked like she was moments away from collapsing.
Wait, this isn't completely horrible.
