Chapter 88 - Chapter 89: A battle in the operating room

Jillian's success in leading the complex heart transplant sent ripples through the hospital. Her name was now spoken with admiration, not just among her peers but also by patients who specifically requested her expertise. The younger doctors sought her guidance, and even the hospital board took notice of her growing influence.

However, not everyone was pleased. Some senior doctors, who had spent years climbing the ranks, viewed Jillian as an upstart who was rising too quickly. Whispers spread through the hospital—some questioned whether she was being given special treatment, while others outright dismissed her success as mere luck.

One particular senior doctor, Dr. Lin, made his disdain clear. He openly challenged Jillian's methods during a case discussion, pointing out minor flaws and questioning her ability to handle high-stakes surgeries without supervision.

"You may have had a few lucky successes, Dr. Smith," he said in front of a room full of doctors. "But experience is something that cannot be rushed. Let's see if you can keep up this momentum."

Jillian met his gaze, unfazed. "With all due respect, Dr. Lin, medicine isn't about luck. It's about skill, continuous learning, and teamwork. And I intend to keep proving myself."

The tension in the room was thick, but Jillian knew she couldn't let doubt creep in. She had worked too hard to let politics and jealousy derail her path.

Later that day, Dr. Zhang called her into his office. He had heard the whispers, and he simply smirked. "You're making waves, Jillian. That's both good and dangerous. Keep your focus, don't let the noise get to you."

Jillian nodded. She wasn't here to play politics—she was here to save lives. But with growing recognition came new battles, and she was ready to face them.

A few weeks after the successful septal myectomy, Jillian was reviewing patient files in her office when her phone buzzed with a message from Dr. Zhang.

"Check out the latest issue of the China Medical Journal. You might find something interesting."

Curious, Jillian quickly searched for the online version. As she scrolled through the contents, her heart skipped a beat.

"Revolutionizing Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Treatment: A Breakthrough at Shanghai Heart Institute."

Her name was listed among the lead contributors, highlighting her role in the high-risk surgery. The article praised the team's precision and innovation, particularly focusing on the use of the nine-needle technique she had suggested.

Jillian leaned back in her chair, taking a deep breath. She had always dreamed of making an impact in medicine, but seeing her name in a prestigious medical journal was surreal.

Within hours, messages started pouring in—colleagues congratulating her, professors from Tsinghua acknowledging her achievement, and even specialists from other hospitals reaching out. Some invited her to conferences, while others wanted her insights on similar cases.

Her recognition, however, didn't sit well with everyone. Dr. Lin and a few other senior doctors grew even more resentful. "A young doctor getting this kind of attention so early is unheard of," they whispered. "She's being reckless. Let's see how long she lasts."

Jillian, however, remained focused. She wasn't in this field for fame—her goal was to help people. But as her name spread across China's top medical circles, she realized this was only the beginning. Bigger opportunities—and bigger challenges—awaited her.

Jillian was reviewing patient files when an urgent case landed on her desk—an extremely rare and complicated heart condition that had left the entire medical team puzzled. The patient, a 14-year-old girl named Mei Ling, had been experiencing severe shortness of breath, unexplained fainting spells, and irregular heart rhythms that defied standard diagnoses.

Dr. Zhang himself was uncertain. "We've run every test, but nothing aligns with known conditions. If we don't act soon, her condition will worsen."

Determined to find an answer, Jillian spent hours combing through medical literature, reaching out to international specialists, and even revisiting her old notes from university. She cross-referenced similar cases, trying to piece together the mystery. After three sleepless nights, she found a potential diagnosis—Bland-White-Garland Syndrome, a rare congenital anomaly affecting the coronary arteries. But it had never been recorded in a patient this age before.

Excited but cautious, Jillian presented her findings to the medical board. Some senior doctors were skeptical. "Are you certain? If you're wrong, the wrong procedure could make things worse," one of them challenged.

Knowing the stakes were high, Jillian proposed bringing in an international expert in pediatric cardiology for a second opinion. The hospital arranged a remote consultation with Dr. Samuel Carter, a leading surgeon from the United States. After reviewing Jillian's research and Mei Ling's test results, he confirmed her suspicions.

"She's absolutely right," Dr. Carter said. "The condition is rare, but it fits. A high-risk surgery is the only way to correct it. It won't be easy."

The surgical team, now fully trusting Jillian's judgment, began preparing for what would be one of the most complex operations they had ever performed. Jillian knew this surgery could either save Mei Ling's life—or become her greatest failure.

The day of Mei Ling's surgery arrived, and the tension in the hospital was palpable. Jillian stood alongside Dr. Zhang and the team, fully aware that this would be one of the most delicate and high-stakes procedures she had ever been a part of.

As the anesthesia took effect and the monitors beeped steadily, Dr. Zhang gave Jillian a firm nod. "You did the research. You'll take the lead."

Jillian's heart pounded, but she steadied herself. This was what she had trained for. As the first incision was made, the surgical team worked meticulously to expose Mei Ling's heart. The anomaly was worse than expected—the coronary artery was not only misplaced but had also begun showing signs of severe narrowing.

"Her vitals are stable, but we need to act fast," Jillian instructed, her voice steady but urgent.

Using micro-surgical techniques, she carefully rerouted the artery, restoring normal blood flow. The procedure demanded absolute precision—one wrong move could mean a fatal bleed or irreversible damage. The entire team was silent, watching Jillian's hands as she worked.

Then, suddenly, Mei Ling's blood pressure dropped drastically.

"She's crashing!" a nurse alerted.

Jillian's mind raced. Did they miss something? Quickly scanning the area, she spotted a hidden tear in a smaller artery—a risk that had been almost impossible to detect pre-surgery.

Without hesitation, she grabbed the micro-sutures. "Increase fluids! I need more visibility," she commanded. With a level of precision that stunned even the senior doctors, she sealed the tear while Dr. Zhang adjusted the heart-lung machine to stabilize Mei Ling.

Minutes felt like hours, but soon the numbers on the monitor began to climb back to normal.

"She's stabilizing," one of the anesthesiologists confirmed.

Jillian let out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding. The hardest part was over. With careful hands, she completed the final steps of the surgery. After what felt like an eternity, the procedure was successfully concluded.

As Mei Ling was wheeled into recovery, Dr. Zhang clapped a hand on Jillian's shoulder. "You saved her life today."

Jillian, still processing everything, simply nodded. She had done it. But more than that, she had proven to herself and everyone in the room that she wasn't just an exceptional doctor—she was becoming a leader in her field.
