Chapter 18 - Chapter 18 - The Warmth of the Future

The warmth of the castle was a stark contrast to the icy winds that howled outside, a testament to Aldric's innovations. The fire in the hearth flickered as if in response to the growing changes taking root within Ravensbourne's stone walls. Aldric's heating system had not only impressed Duke Alaric but had begun to spread its influence, drawing in curious visitors from all corners of the realm.

Alaric's household had been the first to witness the results. The Duke's servants, long accustomed to the chill of the castle, now moved about with ease, no longer wrapped in layers of heavy clothing. The maids and staff found themselves able to work in comfort, and the sense of appreciation was palpable. Matilda, the head maid, was particularly impressed by the transformation. A practical woman with an eye for detail, she had watched with interest as Aldric's ideas took shape in the Duke's castle, marveling at how something as simple as a better heating system could change the daily lives of everyone.

But it wasn't just the household staff that was impressed. Alaric's vassals, when they arrived for their usual visit, were equally astounded by the advancements Aldric had brought. The news had spread quickly—whispers of Aldric's work had reached every corner of the realm, from the kitchens to the stables, and beyond. When Alaric's vassals set foot in the castle, they couldn't help but commend the Duke's foresight in supporting such a forward-thinking individual.

"It's remarkable," Lord Vance, one of Alaric's vassals, said as he stood before the hearth, warming his hands. "I've never felt such comfort in a castle like this before. You've created a small revolution in the span of just months, Aldric."

Aldric gave a modest nod, though his eyes gleamed with the quiet pride of a man who knew this was only the beginning.

"Thank you, Lord Vance," Aldric replied. "But this is just a start. I intend to do much more, for this castle and for Ravensbourne."

As the group continued to tour the Duke's household, even Matilda, who had seen her fair share of noble lords and their grand estates, could not help but marvel at the improvements. The maids spoke in hushed voices among themselves, eagerly discussing the ease of their tasks now that the castle was warm, the hallways no longer drafty, and the air flowing smoothly.

Matilda approached Aldric as he stood by the table, looking over some of his new designs.

"I must admit," she began, "I had my doubts when Lord Alaric first spoke of your ideas. But now, seeing the results for myself—this is beyond anything I could have imagined, and without the assistant of magic. You've truly brought comfort to this castle."

There it was again, the word magic has once again been metion, piqueing his interest. Aldric smiled, his tone respectful yet firm. "It's the first of many steps. If we can create a standard here, why not expand it? Ravensbourne can become a place of prosperity and innovation, not just for the nobility, but for all the people."

Matilda, nodding thoughtfully, added, "The Duke's vassals have been speaking about it—what they've seen here. Some are already interested in meeting with you, to discuss what they can do in their own castles, in their own lands. They want you to bring your expertise to their domains as well."

Before Aldric could inquire more about magic, his gaze sharpened upon hearing the sudden news, and for the first time, he allowed himself to entertain the idea of expansion. He had worked tirelessly for the success of Ravensbourne, but perhaps the time had come to take his vision beyond the castle walls.

"They wish to meet with me?" Aldric asked, the idea forming in his mind. "To discuss how I can assist them with their own domains?"

Matilda nodded, her expression serious. "Yes, they are eager to see what you've done here, and they're impressed. Some are even willing to fund your future ventures in exchange for your expertise. Lord Vance, in particular, has expressed interest in meeting you to discuss a potential partnership."

Aldric paused, considering the offer. It was an unexpected turn of events, but one that felt almost fated. He had hoped his work would speak for itself, and now it seemed that the nobles were beginning to take notice. He turned to Lucien, who had been standing quietly at the window, observing the exchange.

"This could be the breakthrough I've been waiting for," Aldric said quietly. "With their backing, I could expand the scope of this project. It's not just about heating systems. It's about revolutionizing how people live."

Lucien nodded in agreement. "If they're serious about funding you, then it's worth hearing them out. This could be the start of something far larger than you imagined."

After a moment of deliberation, Aldric stood tall, his decision made. "Very well. I'll meet with them. But I'll need to make sure the terms are clear. This is my work, and I won't allow anyone to take it without fair compensation."

The meeting was arranged quickly. Lord Vance, along with several other vassals, made their way to the Duke's private chambers, where Aldric and his team were already waiting. Master Rowan, the seasoned craftsman who had overseen the construction of the heating system, stood beside Aldric. Duke Alaric, too, was present, watching the proceedings with a quiet interest.

As the nobles filed in, Aldric could sense the weight of the opportunity before him. This was more than just a meeting—it was a pivotal moment. The path he chose here would shape the future of his work and, potentially, the future of the realm.

"Lord Vance," Aldric began with a respectful bow, "I am honored that you've taken the time to visit. I understand you wish to discuss the possibility of working together."

Vance, a tall man with a commanding presence, smiled warmly. "Indeed, Aldric. We've heard much about your work here in Ravensbourne, and I must say—I'm impressed. What you've done with your estate is… fascinating."

Vance continued.

"From what I've gathered, farmers are still tending their fields in warm clothing despite the winter. At first, I assumed they were foraging for winter berries, but then I noticed something unusual—plotted farmland, even in the snow? A harvest in the middle of winter? Astonishing. And those massive buildings near your estate—coops large enough to provide meat for the entire village throughout the season.

"And this heating system of yours… from the rumors and what I have gather all these unnatural ideas came from one source…" Lord Vance look at Aldric expectantly. "it's only the beginning, isn't it?"

Aldric met his gaze, nodding. "That's right. This is only the first step in a larger vision—one where we can transform the way we live, entire households, villages, and eventually, regions."

"I believe in your vision," Vance said, his tone resolute. "I've seen firsthand the difference it's made here in Alaric's castle, and I want that for my own lands. We want you to bring your innovations to us, Aldric. To help us improve not just our estates, but the lives of those who serve us."

Aldric's pulse quickened as he realized the scope of what was being offered. "And in return, will you fund these ventures?"

"Ofcourse," Vance replied. "We'll provide the necessary resources and backing. You'll have all you need to expand your work.

Aldric glanced at Master Rowan, who gave a subtle nod of approval. It was clear they were all on the same page. This was an offer too good to refuse. But he knew he had to set boundaries, to make sure that his vision remained intact.

"I'm willing to accept your offer," Aldric said, his voice steady. "But I'll need to work out the details with, Matilda, and Vincent Lorring, my administrative coordinator."

Vance agreed, a glint of respect in his eyes. "We'll be waiting for the good news."

With the terms set, the group discussed logistics, funding, and plans for expansion. Aldric felt the weight of the decision, but also the excitement of what lay ahead. This was no longer just about the success of Ravensbourne—it was about changing the world, one innovation at a time.

As the meeting concluded, Aldric stood at the window, looking out at the snow-covered lands beyond. His mind was alive with possibilities. The road ahead was no longer just a path—it was a bridge to something much greater.

Lucien stood beside him, his eyes thoughtful. "So, this is it. You're taking your work beyond Ravensbourne now."

Aldric nodded, a small smile on his lips. "Yes. And we're just getting started."
