Chapter 13 - The Boy Who Refused to Be Rewritten

Harry POV

I swear, for a moment, I felt my soul try to crawl out of me.

Those… things. Tentacles, covered in blinking eyes. Just there, twisting in mid-air like they didn't belong to anything real. And the Boggart's sounds, those garbled screeches and warped shrieks, made everything ten times worse. It wasn't just frightening. It was wrong.

Dark magic wrong.

But still not like last year's book. Completely different.

I should've looked away, but I couldn't. My eyes stayed glued to the chaos, drawn in by the sheer horror of it. I was already trembling, wand clutched tight in my hand, but I knew I wasn't the only one.

Then Dumbledore arrived.

Thank Merlin.

Just seeing him—calm, collected, robes fluttering like he didn't have a single worry—brought a strange kind of relief.

I thought my fear, the Dementors, was terrifying. But now? I wasn't so sure.

Whatever Draco Malfoy had seen, whatever the Boggart had become, it felt like it wasn't something from this world. And the worst part?

The Boggart couldn't handle it.

Even the creature meant to become fear was crumbling under the weight of it. Like a battery overloaded beyond its limit.

I looked around.

Students were dropping like flies. Some had fainted outright, hit by the magical pressure or maybe just overwhelmed by it all. Hermione was slumped beside Ron, both of them unconscious. A few others still stood, but barely.

And us? I don't think we'd still be on our feet if Dumbledore hadn't shown up when he did.

Professor Lupin had tried. He really had. But this was far beyond a normal Defence lesson. Whatever had just happened, it wasn't in any textbook.

I glanced at Draco again.

He was still upright. Still shielded. But he looked like a statue. No movement. No blinking. Just staring into whatever twisted form the Boggart had taken. His expression looked normal, but he didn't have any.

Was he thinking? Or just too scared, frozen in place?

The girl. The dog. The old man.

They'd seemed so ordinary when the Boggart shifted earlier. But clearly, they weren't.

There was something behind them, something even the Boggart couldn't properly handle.

And that's the part that keeps clawing at me.

What exactly was Draco's fear?

Who are they?

Did they did something?

Why did it break the Boggart?

And more importantly…

Why do I get the feeling it wasn't really a fear at all?

And the strange part is—Harry wasn't wrong.

It wasn't the fear of the forms the Boggart had taken.

It was the situation.

Draco Malfoy wasn't frozen in terror. He wasn't stunned. He was thinking. Thinking hard. About something far deeper than just phantoms.

Is this… truly my fear?

The Presence. The One Above All. Yog-Sothoth—none of them terrified him.

Not really.

He didn't feel fear when he saw them.

What chilled him wasn't their form, but what their presence implied.

The weight behind their appearance.

The whisper that slithered through the mist like a divine verdict.

This was a mistake.

That was what shook him.

The idea that his transmigration—this second chance, this life he was living—might not have been fate. Might not have been earned.

To him it didn't matter whether it was a mistake or someone else's design.

What haunted him…

Was the thought that someone might interfere.

Not death. Not failure.

But the possibility that something—someone—might try to take back the reins. To twist his journey into something else. To rewrite his path, reshape his identity, bend him toward a destiny he had no say in.

He could accept dying.

But he would never accept being rewritten.

This was his journey.

His existence.

And he would fight tooth and nail to keep it that way.

Even if it meant breaking the rules of this world.

Even if it meant tearing reality apart at the seams.

Even if it meant tearing reality apart at the seams.

"Mr Malfoy, you have managed to create quite the… distinctive disturbance."

The voice came gently, with a trace of amusement beneath the solemnity, as though he were commenting on a student exploding a cauldron rather than nearly collapsing the room with raw fear.

Draco turned.

There stood Dumbledore. Unshaken. Cloaked in calm. The fading shimmer of the protective barrier still hummed softly in the air around him. It was the only reason Draco hadn't collapsed like the others.

Draco gave a small nod.

"Thank you, Professor. For shielding me."

Dumbledore's eyes met his, blue and deep as ever, twinkling faintly despite the chaos. There was no trace of reprimand, no visible concern. Only that unreadable calm he always wore—like he already knew how everything would unfold.

"It is the duty of a headmaster to safeguard his students," he said softly, with that unhurried rhythm of his. "Whether Gryffindor or Slytherin, a student under this roof is a student under my care."

Draco accepted that with a quiet, "I know."

His tone wasn't grateful or grateful-sounding—it was reflective. Not surprised. Not even doubtful. Just… understanding.

Because he did know.

In the back of his mind, he remembered all those fanfictions—countless portrayals of Dumbledore as the manipulative puppet master. A schemer. A man who let students die for the Greater Good or sacrificed pawns for some grand vision.

But even in those stories… Dumbledore didn't let kids die easily. Whether it was for the sake of his image, or because of some deeper morality buried beneath the layers—he acted.

At least, in most of them.

And right now, that same man had acted for him.

That, more than anything, made Draco's chest tighten.

Not with emotion. But with clarity.

This man would protect him, atleast in the campus.

But he would also watch him.

Carefully.

Quietly.

And always with that damned twinkle in his eye.
