Jocelyn Yeager smiled, nodded lightly, and said softly, "Alright. Delphine, you too — if someone bullies you, fight back."
The first time Jocelyn saw Delphine Carter, fifteen-year-old Delphine was wearing a faded blue plaid dress. Bessie Leclair, the little princess of the Leclair Family, led a group of girls her age and surrounded Delphine on the lawn. They mocked her mercilessly, shoved her to the ground, pulled her hair, and pinched her cheeks.
The fifteen-year-old girl simply climbed back up silently, patted the dirt off her clothes, and limped away. Back then, Delphine was as thin as a bean sprout, with only a small pointed face and dazzlingly dark eyes that seemed capable of illuminating even the parts of the South Seas darker than the night.
