I couldn't hold myself together when I saw Katrina lying there, so still and pale. It felt like the light in my world had gone out, leaving nothing but darkness behind. My chest tightened with fear, the kind that grabs you from the inside and doesn't let go. I was terrified of losing her. Truly terrified.
I barely heard Fortuna's voice. Whatever she was saying didn't matter to me. She sounded angry, maybe even bitter, but all I could see was Katrina. I held onto hope, even when it felt like everything inside me was breaking apart.
Mother tried to calm her down, tried to reason with her, but it wasn't working. Fortuna wouldn't stop demanding answers like she had forgotten who I was. Did she think I owed her something right now? Did she really believe this was the time?
"For how long will you keep ignoring me, Karl? I need an explanation and you owe me that much!" she shouted, and I could feel the tension in the room tighten.
