081 Qin Yun Appears! Rival Is Infernape
"Qin Yun?"
Zhang Haochen followed everyone's gaze and recognized the boy who had caused an uproar earlier with his Heracross, displaying an astonishing performance that exceeded a battle power rating of 3,000.
"It's him!"
Zhang Haochen still had a clear impression of Qin Yun.
"But his Pokémon is weaker than mine, and I wasn't even close to matching Master Wu. How could this Qin Yun possibly be his Rival?"
"Could it be that Master Wu is only keeping me here to watch him go easy on Qin Yun, humiliating me by showing favoritism?"
Having been praised all his life, Zhang Haochen had developed an inflated ego, always believing himself to be the center of attention. He assumed the world revolved around him like a planetary system bound by his gravitational pull.
But the reality was different he was just one among many.
To Master Wu, he was, at best, a young trainer with potential, but not someone worth scheming against. If anything, Zhang Haochen's self-importance was his own downfall.
Meanwhile, Qin Yun was already prepared to battle.
"Master Wu, my Pokémon is fine. That was just a warm-up to get it into its best condition."
"No need for a break."
"I'm ready to start right now if you don't mind."
Qin Yun had been captivated by Master Wu's battle style and felt his competitive spirit ignite. He couldn't wait any longer.
"Hahaha! Very well, then let's get straight to the match!"
Master Wu laughed heartily at Qin Yun's eagerness.
He had heard rumors that a high school student had defeated Hongshen, the Gym Leader of Red City, and even took the time to confirm the details. When Qin Yun arrived and presented a badge from Hongshen's Gym, he immediately knew this was the same prodigious trainer.
"Good!"
A look of excitement flashed across Qin Yun's face as he strode onto the battlefield.
Ma Tao was stunned. Was Qin Yun here to challenge the gym?
But hadn't Master Wu already defeated all the challengers yesterday? Shouldn't there have been a qualification round first?
Then again, Zhang Haochen had skipped his own qualification challenge.
"I heard that last month you defeated the Red Pavilion Master. That's impressive."
Master Wu observed Qin Yun with interest, appreciating the young man's confidence and direct nature.
"What? Qin Yun defeated the Red Pavilion Master last month?"
"Who's the Red Pavilion Master?"
"I don't know!"
"Then why are you so worked up?"
The people on the sidelines were confused, but one man looked at them as if they were clueless.
"Even if you don't know him, isn't the fact that he's a Gym Leader proof enough that he's strong?"
"Fair point…"
The seemingly random conversation below carried weight, shocking many in the audience.
"This Qin Yun… defeated the Red Pavilion Master last month and earned a badge?"
"No wonder he can directly challenge the gym."
"I wonder which university he attends… Is he a freshman or a sophomore?"
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Gym Leaders were portrayed as elite trainers who set the standard for Pokémon battles. For Qin Yun to have defeated one at such a young age was no small feat.
Some spectators studied Qin Yun's youthful face and speculated:
"He looks so young. If you told me he was still in high school, I'd believe it."
Only two people in the crowd knew the truth—Master Wu and Sister Hua.
Sister Hua's hands trembled with excitement. She hadn't expected Qin Yun to have already taken down a Gym Leader. This was massive news!
"The Red Pavilion Master… That must be Hongshen from Red City's Gym!"
"This scoop could turn everything around for me!"
Meanwhile, a rival reporter looked embarrassed. She had mocked Sister Hua earlier, only to realize she had underestimated her.
"Film everything focus on Qin Yun!"
"Yes!"
Her cameraman quickly turned his lens toward Qin Yun.
Zhang Haochen, however, was unimpressed.
"It's just luck."
Qin Yun, humble as ever, responded, "It was a tough battle."
"Haha, what a modest kid."
"But Hongshen is truly formidable. His Bug-type team is something even I respect."
Master Wu's tone grew serious when he mentioned the Red Gym Leader. Hongshen was a master of Bug-types, with strategies that overwhelmed even seasoned trainers.
Qin Yun nodded, recalling the fierce battle he had endured to claim victory.
"Of course, Hongshen focuses almost entirely on his main team, while his secondary team doesn't receive as much training."
"But I'm different," Master Wu continued. "I personally train my second team just as rigorously. Every Pokémon under my care has received my full attention."
"If your strength hasn't improved significantly since your last battle, you won't be able to defeat me and claim a badge."
His voice was filled with confidence.
"Then we'll see!"
Qin Yun's eyes burned with determination.
A battle that was too easy wouldn't excite him. He lived for challenging, unpredictable fights, where victory was never certain.
"You young people and your confidence… Alright, let's start the match!"
Master Wu gave a slight nod, signaling the referee to take center stage.
"The match will be a three-on-three Gym Challenge. When all three Pokémon on one side are unable to battle, the other side wins."
"The Gym Leader may not switch Pokémon during the match."
"Understood."
Both Qin Yun and Master Wu nodded simultaneously, their gazes locked in mutual respect.
Their attitude was worlds apart from Zhang Haochen's.
Zhang Haochen had treated Pokémon battles as stepping stones to fame, nothing more than a performance for personal glory. But to Qin Yun, this was a true test of skill, strategy, and bond with his Pokémon.
Zhang Haochen's expression darkened when he heard that Qin Yun had already earned a Gym Badge.
"The Red Pavilion Master? That's in Red City, across the border…"
"Hmph, that Gym Leader must be weak. Or maybe he went easy on Qin Yun. I'll challenge him myself in two days!"
He scoffed, further cementing his growing resentment toward Qin Yun.
"Both trainers, please send out your Pokémon within 10 seconds."
"Go, Infernape!"
A Poké Ball burst open, releasing a figure wreathed in flames.
