The Blackbird descended smoothly, its landing gears pressing gently into the soft white sands of the isolated beach. A light breeze rustled through the palm trees, the air thick with the scent of salt and damp earth.
As the hatch opened, the team stepped forward, feeling the warmth of the sun on their skin. Then—"Your landings are getting smoother, Scott," Bobby quipped with a grin, stepping down onto the sand. Alex smirked, arms crossed. "Yeah, but with the help of smooth beach sand, anyone can do it." A chuckle rippled through the team.
Scott exhaled sharply. "You guys done? We're on a mission. Focus."
Bobby shrugged. "Hey, keeping your muscles relaxed reduces the chance of injury."
Scott shook his head. "Alright. All geared up? Nothing left behind?"
A chorus of "Affirmative."
Scott gave a nod. "Let's move."
One by one, they stepped out onto the pristine shore, their boots sinking slightly into the warm, untouched sand. The island looked… normal. Too normal.
The ocean waves lapped gently against the shore. Undisturbed by their presence. The island stretched before them—a dense, green jungle, thick with towering trees and twisting vines.
It was quiet. Too quiet.
Alex narrowed his eyes. "I don't like this."
Bobby exhaled. "Yeah, but maybe it's just because this is a hidden island."
Scott shook his head. "Not when Cerebro detected a mutant life form here."
Jean suddenly pressed her fingers against her temple, closing her eyes. A moment passed before she spoke. "Guys, I'm picking up faint mutant energy… deep inside the island."
Alex and Bobby exchanged glances before looking at Scott.
Scott exhaled. "Alright. We secure the island slowly. We'll use a circling method to make sure the perimeter is safe."
Bobby frowned. "We could split up to cover more ground faster."
Alex and Scott immediately answered in unison. "No. We don't split up."
Bobby blinked. What was that about?
Jean chuckled. "Don't take it personally, Bobby."
Bobby turned to her. "Then what is it?"
Jean smirked. "They tried to scare Gabriel with horror movies. Turns out, they were the ones who got scared instead."
Bobby's eyes widened. "Wait— is that why Gabriel suddenly got into horror stuff?!"
Petra chuckled. "Turns out Gabriel is the bravest Summers brother."
Alex groaned. "Come on, that's not fair. Gabriel was asleep. He didn't watch it like we did."
Bobby grinned. "Aha! So you admit it—you were scared."
Scott sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. This was going to be a long mission. Scott exhaled, then gave the order. "Enough. Let's move."
The team turned toward the dense jungle, ready to uncover the island's secrets.
…
The sun blazed overhead, reflecting off the glistening waves as Jack continued to row his tiny boat across the ocean. His Ruyi Jingu Bang stretched and retracted with each stroke, reaching down to the ocean floor like a ridiculous-looking fishing pole.
Jack sighed, leaning back. "Wow. This is… way slower than I thought." His staff hummed, vibrating slightly as if agreeing with his complaint.
Jack clicked his tongue. "Well, no rush. Let's enjoy the sun, shall we? Who knows, maybe we'll run into an assassin dolphin." The staff trembled, almost as if it shuddered at the idea.
Jack grinned. "Oh, come on, don't be scared! Or—hey, what if we stumble upon the lost city of Atlantis? Maybe they've got some mystical fabric that'll make my robes even cooler. I could use an upgrade."
The ocean stretched endlessly, the waves lapping lazily against the boat. The world around him seemed peaceful—deceptively so.
Time slipped away, and soon, the sun hung low in the sky, painting the horizon in hues of orange and purple. Jack yawned. "Welp. Any minute now, something interesting is gonna happen."
…
Back on the island, the X-Men moved deeper into the forest. The atmosphere was unnervingly quiet. The tall trees loomed overhead, their canopies thick, allowing only small rays of light to peek through. The ground was soft beneath their boots, layered with fallen leaves and damp earth.
Scott led the formation. Scott at the front, Bobby on the left, Alex on the right, Jean and Petra in the middle, and Logan at the back, supervising silently.
Each step was measured. The island felt normal. Too normal.
Alex spoke up first. "I think we can rule out military interference, brother."
Scott nodded. "I think so too."
Bobby glanced at both of them. "And why's that?"
Alex sighed. "Did you not pay attention during Logan's theoretical class?"
Bobby scratched his head. "Uh…"
Scott elaborated, "If this were a military-controlled island, they wouldn't leave their perimeter unsecured."
Alex added, "And the fact that we haven't encountered a single human presence so far pretty much confirms it."
Bobby's eyes flickered toward Logan, who had been silent up until now. Logan stared at him. Judging. Bobby winced. "Okay, okay—I didn't mean to not listen to your class, Logan."
Logan's expression didn't change. "Focus on the mission, bub." Bobby sighed in defeat.
They pressed on, weaving through thick foliage, their boots sinking slightly into the damp undergrowth. The air was heavy, charged with an unspoken tension.
Then—Water. The dense forest gave way to a swamp. The murky water stretched in patches, reflecting the golden hues of the setting sun. The occasional plop of something moving beneath the surface made the team pause.
Scott reached out, marking the bark of a tree with a digital tracker. A subtle but important waypoint.
He turned to the others. "Alright, that's far enough. We've mapped the outer part of the island. No signs of threats, no signs of human activity. We're heading back to the Blackbird to reconvene with the Professor and reassess."
No objections. They turned back toward the beach—unaware of the eyes watching them from the darkness of the jungle.
…
The X-Men arrived back at the Blackbird, the dark jet standing out against the pristine white sands of the beach. The sun was beginning to set, casting a deep orange glow across the waves.
Scott exhaled, scanning the treeline one last time before turning to his team. "Alright. Alex, Bobby—grab the portable camp from the Blackbird. Petra, prepare a stable ground for us near the beach. We need a proper setup before nightfall."
Alex and Bobby nodded, heading toward the jet's storage compartment.
Petra took a deep breath and pressed her palm against the ground. The earth trembled beneath them, shifting as she carefully raised a section of solid ground, leveling out a clean, flat surface for their temporary base.
Jean, still pale from mental exhaustion, sat down on a rock nearby, pressing a hand against her temple. Sweat lined her forehead.
Bobby noticed and nudged her shoulder. "Hey, you good? You're looking a little… well, you know, Jean-ish, but not in a good way."
Jean let out a soft chuckle, her voice tired. "I just need rest. Scanning the whole island for energy traces took a lot out of me."
Petra smirked. "That's because you tried to brute-force it. You have finesse, Jean, but your range is insane—no wonder you're fried."
Jean sighed. "I didn't expect it to be this exhausting… but something about this island feels wrong."
Bobby sat down beside her. "Yeah, well, let's hope whatever wrong thing is hiding here doesn't show up for a bedtime story."
Scott and Logan stepped into the Blackbird's cockpit, the dim lighting casting long shadows along the control panels. The communication screen flickered to life, revealing Professor Xavier and Storm at the other end of the line.
Scott adjusted his earpiece. "Professor, teacher Ororo—we've scanned the perimeter. No signs of human interference. That means the chance of this being a military operation is low. But…"
Xavier leaned forward slightly. "But?"
Scott's expression darkened. "That only increases the likelihood that we're dealing with an Omega-level mutant. Possibly one with the ability to create cloud coverage to cloak the island."
Storm crossed her arms. "That would explain why Cerebro couldn't get a clear read."
Xavier nodded thoughtfully. "And what about the rescue?"
Scott exhaled. "No progress. Jean detected a mutant energy deep within the forest, but that's all we have. The readings are faint. There's a chance this island has different biomes as well—we might be dealing with more than just a jungle."
Storm's voice was firm. "Be sure you understand what you're up against before engaging, Scott. Our priority is rescuing the mutant, not unnecessary confrontation."
Scott nodded. "Understood. First thing tomorrow morning, we breach the deeper parts of the island."
Xavier's voice softened. "You're doing well, Scott. Now, leave Logan with us for a moment."
Scott hesitated for a second, then nodded. He stood up, glanced at Logan, then stepped out of the cockpit.
As soon as the door slid shut, Xavier turned his attention fully to Logan.
Xavier's tone was measured. "Alright, Logan. How's the team holding up? Your assessment?"
Logan leaned against the wall, arms crossed. He took a slow breath before answering.
"They're good. But…"
Xavier's eyes narrowed slightly. "But?"
Logan's gaze flickered toward the closed door.
"Scott's holding up, but he's second-guessing himself. Jean's overextending, Alex and Bobby are still too green for something unknown like this. Petra's solid—but even she's getting nervous."
Storm frowned. "You think they're not ready?"
Logan shook his head. "I think they'll be forced to be ready, whether they like it or not."
Xavier sighed, clasping his hands together. "Then we'll have to trust them. Keep them safe, Logan."
Logan smirked slightly. "Ain't that what I do best?"
The screen flickered off, leaving the cockpit in silence. Logan ran a hand through his hair, muttering under his breath. "Damn kids better not die on me."
