Chapter 69 - Hiding

It had been two weeks since Leah and I last spoke, and not a single day passed without her words echoing in my head.

I didn't want them to, but they did.

They ran deep, messing with my thoughts, and stained everything else.

Concentrating in class became a battle I lost everyday.

Conversations with Christian turned strained and brief. I replied to his messages hours, sometimes days, late. When he called, I made up excuses. I was always busy. Studying. With friends. At the library.

I could tell he'd noticed.

He tried to talk the last time I was home, but I brushed him off

And then, one evening during the week day, he showed up unannounced on my doorstep.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, stepping down from my car, and walking toward the porch. He stood up from the bench by the entrance where he'd apparently been waiting.

"I can't come to visit?" He asked, his tone light, though I saw the concern in his eyes.

"Why?" I asked, more defensive than I meant to sound.
